hello everyone,
just want to say hello, time to switch back to an old hobby, boating. its time to sell the motorcycle and get something the family can enjoy. the past history of 20yrs boating, 14 alum. w/ 9.9, 15ft 1956 thompson lapstrake 35hp o/b (wish i still had it), 20ft bayliner cuddy I/O. I am not real knowledgable about engines so my question? what advantages to having a o/b engine or i/o are there? my perfect idea, low gas usage, maintance, repair costs and winterization. any previous threads that you could point me to would be great. take care, david

outboard is much less maintenance, easier to work on, and winterize. Horse Power is HP, fuel usage rule of thumb, or either type is about 1 gallon, per 10 HP per hour.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

unless your gonna go back to having the 14' aluminum boat w/ the 9.9 on it. low gas use, low maint. low repair and winterization costs is not what will happen. boating is expensive and so are repairs. even if you do them yourself..

i/o's (chg. direction 2 times and are through the transom with bellows, ujoints and gimble brgs.)are more complex drives than o/b's (only one direction change at the prop, no bellows, no ujoints, no gimble brgs. etc. and nothing through the transom). therefore have more maint. to perform...
