Hello all, this is my first time posting on iboats. I have a 1981 Glastron V192 that I am in the process of restoration. I have a question about wet sanding....how do I do it? I have looked all over, high and low, to find a general how to guide, but to no avail. Most is on the starboard side, right at the line of the boat cover. I hope friscoboater chimes in on this, I can't send a pm, and I LOVE what he did to his Glastron.

Done some work on some 60's metal flake cars. Boats should be the same but I am a newbie on boats but here's my 2 cents worth.
If, it is not down to the metal flake and only the clear coat is affected then wet sanding MIGHT take care of your problem. Start in a small area, clean it with warm soapy water and rinse. Get a fine mist spray bottle and start with 800 grit keeping the paper and the surface wet at all times. Work up to 1500 grit. Use some polishing compound and a buffer to buff it out and see how she looks. If it is down to the flake, then coat it, sand it, and paint it.

Good Luck

:)

Nothing of this nature has been done to the boat before, so the clearcoat is nice and thick for it.

I took a close look at your pics and I would first start with a light compound, water and a buffer. If that did not work, I'd try the wet sanding. It does not appear that bad in the pics. Rubbing compound can go along way with oxidation and discoloration.

Just be careful to not get into the metal flake.

You need to check out my restoration thread. My boat is very close to what you have. I did the wet sanding thing with great results.

Oh my! It looks like the engine torqued the transom and cracked the gelcoat. The good news is that it is fixable, and we are here to help you.

Re: New to iboats, 1981 Glastron V192 Restoration

I hate to sound like such a noob, but I am 20, and well, I have never done anything like this in my life, is there a book that I can get that will give me the basics on how to do this?

I was out a little later today after I took the pictures and movie. I was in the boat, and I walked from one side to another, and heard a sloshing sound. I have heard this before and I thought it was just the fuel tank. Too bad I took the fuel tank out so I was like:confused: I took a screwdriver and poked and prodded the wood under the gas tank, soon I made a 1'x1' hole in the wood. Under this wood is about 3" of water:eek: it goes from the gas tank to the ski locker, and it completely full of ice cold water, chine to chine. It looks like Glastron did not add a hole between the bilge area and the rest of the boat. God only knows how long that water has been in there, and more importantly, what damage has been done. Is this normal(not the water, but the lack of a hole)?
