So I found my first boat, got it for free, it is a MFG Westfield Custom, I believe it is a 67 from the brochures I found online. The boat looks like it is in really good shape, no cracks, damage, missing parts or unexplained holes but being new to boats, boating, fiberglass and MFGs has led me to alot of questions and they just keep getting more and more as I read more and more posts. It seems that there are alot of knowledgable people in here and I hope yall will help me out. I hope its not rude but im gonna post all the questions I have right here and hope someone can come along and answer them for me. Well here goes.......
1. I have been reading alot about transom (a word i just learned recently) repairs because of rotting plywood is this something that I have to worry about on mine?
2. If it is a problem on my model is it something I can put off fixing till the end of the season since I only have a 50 horse Johnson on it?
3 I would like to tow tubes behind it for my kids, I believe I would hook up to the rings on the back of the boat but if this is the case will there be a problem if the plywood is rotted?
As you can probably tell I am pretty worried about the transom thing, when I tap it it sounds solid but I havent drilled holes yet.
4. The seats are still in the boat and as far as I can tell they are the original ones just reupohlstered, they arent mounted and I would like to turn them into bench seats along the sides and put 2 captains chairs in the front, is there any special way to mount them to fiberglass, do I have to reinforce or is there a design that will work better for this boat than others?
5. The paint on this boat looks pretty good but seems to be oxidized (if thats possible) there are no chips, flakes or bare spots, is there a way to shine up this teal and white beauty. Can I maybe buff it and if so what compound should I use. I have a buffer and have experience with cars but none with fiberglass so I am open to any suggestions.
6. On the topic of buffing, my windshield is hazy, is there a compound I can use to do this too?
7. This boat has an outboard on it obviously, is there an alternator in it? If so can I put a stereo in my dash and run power to it from the outboard or should I just bring a boom box?
8. I saved the dumbest for last, I have 2 holes in the back of the boat, one goes into the boat and the other seems to go under the deck. They dont have plugs in them but I am assuming I have to plug em before I put it in the water is this so? Oh yeah, I have a thing in the back near the dip for the drain hole, it kinda looks like it might be a pump, can someone tell me what it is, it has wires running to it.
Well if you made it this far then I thank you for reading and I hope you can give me some tips and pointers, I plan on working on the boat on saturday so I will take some photos to post then. Thanks in advance for your help.

1-Yes
2-No, you are on the water, not land, in case something comes apart on the transom, fix problem then have fun.Tap and see if it sounds solid and uniform, then drill a few random holes or take a pick to a existing hole and feel for soft wood.Try to pull some shavings out,if dry okay.Fill in holes with 3m 4200/5200 or similiar sealent
3-yes
4-Find the largest diameter bases for your Captains seats. They spread the load out more which allows the largest SSteel screws that will fit through the metal to have more holding power.I would also use 3m5200 or some other strong sealent/glue to put in those screw holes as that will aid the screws from pulling out in the long run.
5-Resto section has many topics on bringing that finish back to life. Start with the least abrasive compound and see what happens.
6-Windshield can also be buffed out, again check resto section
7- Depends on year and model of motor.A new dual purpose battery will be able to run that radio all day and start the motor even if it does not have a alternator.Start motor up and unhook battery, if it keeps running it may has some sort of charging system.See if there something besides the starter motor that is driven off the belt.A cheap dvom will also tell you by touching leads to battery while running giving you voltage numbers.
8- you have a subfloor. The one under the deck drains that area out.If dry I would put a plug in it while using boat, then take it out when on land. The one going out the stern MUST have a plug in it before launching. The bilge pump is for rain and excess water brought in by tubers/skiers swimmers etc. There should be a switch that turns it on and off. It may also be a 3 way switch, auto mode/manual mode and off mode, follow wires to get your answer.
9- Double check the transom and post results for feedback.Sounds like a great find have fun!!

Alright so my transom wood is rotted now what to do, It looks like i need to pull off the top of my boat to get to the transom, is this so? Can someone send me a link on how this was done on my model. I was also wondering if I were to plate the back of my boat with say diamond plate or something would that work, or maybe cut a piece of 1 inch plywood and fit it against the back, hmmmmmm. well here are the pics and Mr 88 thanks for your input but the search on this site sucks and i can find the posts for the topics on restoration. again thanks for all pointers im glad there are people that know what they are doing on here

I would not pop the lid.I would take the trim piece off the transom, cut the thin piece of glass covering it and dig out the old wood. Then I would pour a transom Sea Cast or something similiar.I have seen write ups on this either here or on Fiberglassics.com which has a huge resto section. Again back to the search icon..It will cost about 200$ to do it that way..Or you can cut the inner transom glass off .You leave about 2" of the glass on the sides so you have more strenght when re-glassing.The trick at this point is putting new wood in with the spashwell still in place. You have to layer , cross piece it and glue as you go along.

Upon further review to my response on your charging system,do not take battery cables off while motor is running, stick with the Volt ohm meter.Certain models [older Mercs] may burn parts up if you do this, sorry for the misinformation. The picture shows a "newer" Johnny on it that should have a charging system.
