Ok Gents...here is the issue. I cannot tell how this wheel is supposed to come off. I have looked for rings, pins, etc...and nothing seems to make sense. I know one of you (perhaps all) have a simple answer.

Have you looked on the back side? If you can get the drum off then maybe you can get the rest on a bench to work on. I guess that's a keyway I see there. You'll probably need a puller to get the wheel off that shaft. If you can get the whole business loose from the back you MIGHT be able to tap the shaft out with a brass hammer.

Re: New to iBoats: Starcraft Restoration Project

I just changed the wheel on my 78 Starcraft Super Sport. On mine the shaft is tappered. The tighter you torque the nut the tighter the wheel interfearence fits to the shaft. The keyway also to keeps the wheel from spinning on the shaft should the nut back off for what ever reason.

To get the wheel off I pulled on the wheel and had my son smack the end of the shaft with a brass hammer. If you do this , be very careful or you will mushroom the end of the shaft if its hit to hard with the hammer. You could also use a big 3 jaw gear puller.

My son did have to smack it 4 or 5 times in order to get it off. There was some corrosion holding it in place from 30 years of uncovered neglect.

Hope this helps you:)

Forgot to add:

Once you have the wheel off there should be a plate with 3 studs and nuts to remove. Once removed this will let the drum assembly come out from the back under the dash panel.

Ok. I'll give your ideas a try.

I did look behind and there is nothing but the pully hub. I think I will try and take the whole dash off and go from there. There isn't much to salvage.

I just took another look at the picture you provideed. Once you have the wheel off the chrome trim ring just under the steering wheel will come off. Under that chrome trim ring is where the bolts are located to remove the drum assembly.

Ok...that is what I like to hear. I am hoping to address the wheel this weekend.

To date:

* All hardware removed, itemized, and stored. Most of it being original will return to the boat...polished nicely.

*I have applied two coats of primer to the topside, filled in holes and deep scratches. I will be finishing the last sanding in preparation for paint.

* Took some poly resin & glass matt to the stern deck area to reinforce for raised fishing seat.

Next:

* Buying deck ply and marine carpet (more poly resin)
* Sizing aft bench seating area and will be making a new bench seat.
* Looking for two forward seats, probably will have them swivel
* Carb kit and new impeller for Johnson 40
* In the hunt for a used trolling motor 40+ thrust. Not sure if I will go with a bow or transom mount.

Thanks for all your input.

Re: New to iBoats: Starcraft Restoration Project

Update w/pix:

I've made a little more progress on the project. Installing the new deck is taking some effort and time I didn't figure on. A lot of time staring at the boat and visualizing "how" to do it, and then chipping away. I made a decision to completely remove all the decking instead of leaving the aft "fishing deck" in place. A little more effort but worth it. Some of it came from a decision to go with lounge seats forward and jumpers in the stern. Seating for six seems right, plus I'll have a fishing seat in the stern and on the bow area. Supporting the deck is my last challenge so any ideas would be much appreciated. My initial thought was a single 8' 2x6 tapered along the center keel area, supported fore and aft and then to the deck. Thoughts?

I'm ordering paint this week and plan to paint the topside once the decking is done. The family has agreed to a light blue Interlux color.

This boat needs to be ready to fish by June 4th.

I know exactly what you mean. I glued mine in last night, about 2 weeks after I thought I'd be done. Glad to see you moving forward.:)

For paint, I've used 'Interlux - Brightside - Polyurethane' with good success. It comes in many colors and shines like it's wet.

That's the stuff! I'm glad to hear it worked well for you. How did you apply it? Roller, brush, etc...

How did you do the support under the deck? I am really looking for ideas here.

As for the actual deck I am using 1/2 inch ply and will be sealing it with a poly resin. I was thinking about using a glass mat at the joints to keep everything level.

Poly with no cloth will crack, No use in doing it with no cloth.

thinned epoxy will seal it somewhat better, but I think you need more support for the deck, due to the width. I wouldn't go over 2' between supports for the deck, length ways, and some intermediates at the joints.

thanks for the help. I'm trying to avoid connecting to the stringers as much as possible.

I see the value in adding the cloth.

Without the deck supported properly, it will flex too much.
Unless you plan to put some water-sucking foam under it....

I used a good brush. It evened out nicely. I probably could have sanded between coats for even beter results, but one coat was fine for me. Prepare surface per instructions (sand & clean).
