Picked up my new-to-me Hewes with a 98 carb'd 150 (150TLRW) Thursday. Brought it home and decided to run it on the hose for a while. Started right up, sounds good etc. Until -- and there's always an "until" -- the starter bendix would jump up and hit the flywheel. That makes lots of noise.

Decided that the exciter wire on the starter solenoid had to be getting juice somehow ocassionally. Starter would try to engage at random, nothing consistant. I started the motor and disconnected the wire and sure enough the starter didn't try to engage. Thought I'd check voltage (harness side) and sure enough it had juice. All the time!

The strange thing was that when I unplugged the tan wire, the motor would speed up. From about 700 to 1100 rpm. Then I decided to unhook the main harness to eleminate the boat harness and key switch. Unhooking the main harness caused the motor to slow down in rpm. From 700 to about 500.

I called by buddy who is a good Yamaha tech and he said that was impossible. I said no, it's not impossible -- you might not have ever seen it but it's possible. Trust me. So off I go and sure enough it does just what I described at his shop on his hose.

We both figured the only thing it could be was a bad key switch (didn't want to hear about a bad wiring harness). Plugged in a new key switch and had 2 days of trouble free boating.

It sure uses a lot less fuel than the 22' Hydra Sport we sold.
