Hi everyone. Decided to pick up this old evinrude tonight for 100 bucks. I kinda wanted a little project and a backup incase my main motor has issues. Anyways the guy said it ran good last year just had no use for it. He started it for a couple seconds on a little shot of carb cleaner. I know this is a bad practice, I hope it didnt damage it, but I'm sure it's okay. It did sputter up. Anwyays, the motor came with the evinrude simplex controls and a black junction box. It also came with the hood cowling with the front latch and everything. Prop looks almost brand new as well. Before I get into the standard tune up stuff I'm really confused about the wiring from the junction box. I seem to have a motor harness(makes sense) Pos and neg wired(makes sense) And a group of wires for some weird amp gauge?, the choke push switch, as well as 2 stripped wires for what I assume would be an ignition switch? Does that mean the ignition switch only has 2 terminals, on and off? Im not sure how aj ignition switch could be less then 3 way?(off run on)Maybe I'm not quite understanding it just seems confusing. Also there is a 2 studs on the outside of the junction box with wingnuts on them? As for the motor itself I really dont get what this thing on bolted on the right side is? It's got a wire connected right on top and there is a black wire with a ring terminal disconnected? Just not sure how to kill the motor with either manual and electric start? Anwyays any help or information on this motor at all would be very helpful as I try to get this thing running. Thank you! 20190530_202037.jpg20190530_203215.jpg20190530_202029.jpg

The thing on the side of the motor is a vacuum cut-out switch. It prevents the motor from running wild in neutral or no-load condition such as a broken drive pin. The ignition switch, if you had one, will not work with that wire disconnected. The ignition switch stops the motor by connecting the two black wires from the magneto together when turned "Off".

Perhaps this diagram will help.

Thanks for th me help everyone. That link should help a ton. I will try to figuire out the wiring when I get home. honestly i have no use for connecting accessories to the junction box. Does the generator charge the battery at all? That vaccume thing makes sense, but where does that black ring terminal connect in the picture? I will post pictures of lower unit below thanks 20190531_073330.jpg20190531_073335.jpg20190531_073339.jpg

Also, I'm trying to find a carb kit for this thing but I don't see it anywhere? On the BRP site I see a kit for the 1959 35 hp but nothing for the 1958? I forgot to add that there is light blue spark plug boots. Maybe someone has already gone through the ignition?

You might want to check the plug wires.----They need to be metal wire core.-----Have you done a compression test ?-----Or inspected pistons / rings via the 2 bypass covers ?

Yes, the generator puts out 10 Amps. Compare that to the 6 Amps many newer motors put out. However, being a DC gen it doesn't work until you get up to about 1500-2000 RPM.

The wiring diagram says where the wires go.

1959 kit will work. Kits usually contain extra parts to cover multiple years/horsepowers.
