Hello, I just bought a 1985 Bay liner Capri 16' with a 1985 white cover Force 85hp. What do I need to know about this engine? What are common issues and fixes? Anything special that I should check? What is good compression per hole? What was factory new compression? Please post anything that can help me have this engine as reliable as possible. I have been working on omc outboards for a while but the old Force outboards are new to me. Thanks for any replies.

Ok you are probably asking all the questions your manual will tell you, what's that you say, you don't have a manual. Get one, get one now LOL. First thing I always do first is check compression, even before I buy the motor I check comp. If it is more like the Chrysler, and by the sounds of the year it is, the Chryslers are easy to work on and this should be the same.
Check or replace your impeller and also check water pump housing, next I check my plugs and usually put new ones in so I have a base to start from. Check, replace your lower unit gear oil. Put a filter in between your pump and your carbies. Check fuel lines, check quality of fuel, maybe even run some Seafoam through it so you know it is cleaned out. I hate using muffs and have a huge esky I use as some of these motors don't like the muffs, but if it doesn't suck the water up much on the muffs it can also be a sign of a bad impeller.

Mate at the end of the day, get a manual, nothing better than working it out yourself and fixing a problem. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for a good manual for this engine. Do you recommend any? I have many jonnyrude manuals but many things cant be found in the manual. Trying to set cam timing for instance on a 40 year old Evinrude is going to be different then the manual says due to wear. I'm looking for those things that people have found with experience with this engine...

I would be chatting to Frank Acampora on this forum, he is definately a wizz on these motors. I don't have a manual for a force but being a 85 model it probably has around 120, I think the Chrysler 85hp motors were specd with 130 - 140 so 120 would be good for that age. The thing you don't want with compression is differences of more than 10% between cylinder readings. So if your comp is ok do your lower unit oil, and impellor. The fuel diaphragm may also need checking, but if you check it you may as well get a new one and gasket, as the gasket on my Chrysler goes every time I replace the diaphragm.

slx,fillout the profile,location.
You might be close to someone who can help.
Do a compression/spark test.
The compression with a GOOD gauge.150-155#
My motors both have 150# on all 6
What your looking for is all 3 cylinders even.
The motor is a Force. They are the same as a Chrysler just a name change in the early 80's.
They still called some of them Chrysler for a couple of years.
But if it was on a Bayliner it was a Force.
Since it's new to you:do the impeller, oil change and the filter before the carb.
A decarb and remove the fuel recirc system and clean the screens and check forr clogs.
When using the muffs,if they don't fit tight? Duct tape them in place.
My port motor doesn't draw as good as the stbd. So I use duct tape on that one.
The lower needs to be dry for the tape to stick.
Clean the carbs.
Remember where the air screws were set.
Take pics before any disasembly.

Hey Mick,what's an esky?

PICT0009.jpg LOL got you curious Jerryjerry. An esky is virtually a plastic lined container normally with a lid and it is lined by foam to keep the cold in for cold drinks or meat etc. you may just see part of it at the bottom of the picture. Americans might call them a cooler or ice box?
Sorry for the incorrect specs on the compression I was looking at the wrong motor, an 85hp Chrysler should have 145 - 155 and for the charger version it is 150 - 165
