How do I tell the diff between a 270 and 275 out drive not sure it is a 270

Engine and outdrive had the cleanest oil I have ever seen and after a prop change and gas it ran like a champ should I start ripping into and change the basics or if it ain't broke don't fix it for awhile. Don't know much about this boats just kinda fell into my lap. Also have a second one that I picked up just for the trailer seeing as it was made for the boat and a steal. Engine cranks and runs after a carb job and outdrive seems to be in great shape as well it is a 85 2450 and has 225d and a 280 This should fit as a spare for my boat right? And can I mate the 280 to my existing engine and vice versa? Or will it be to much load. Any info and/diagrams so I can order some backup parts would be awesome. Thanks in advance everyone

275 or 280 or 290.
The 275 drive is ok just the way it comes.
From what I understand they can handle up to 700hp??(hope my memorys right).
Does the 280 come with trim/tilt?
The 275 has tilt but no trim.
volvo penta store . com on line Look up your motor/drive.

They will look identical, just look at the tag on the upper gear box just in front of the cap. The number will start with a 270 or 275.

The 280 will replace the 270/275 as long as they both have the same attaching method for the helmet where it bolts to the upper gear box. Some of the earlier drives had a single bolt/pin that was used. The 280 used a pin with two bolts in it.
The lower units are interchangeable without a problem, you just have to change the bearing race for the vertical shaft bearing and reshim it. The two bolt style will not fit the single bolt type, the through hole in the helmet is different size.

You can order parts right here at iboats, just click on the Volvo Penta parts icon just above your original post.

I am computer iletirate so I hope I am responding correctly

Don.
Thanks for the info that is good to know I will take a look when I get back to town and see for sure. Definitely good to know I have spares that can be changed out or may end up striping it down gelcoating and use as dive boat strictly. Either way it is there.

Jerry
At the risk of sounding dumb I will ask a further question what is te difference between trim and tilt both out drives have power trim and the reverse locking mechanism so not sure what the difference is. ??? Also posted location but the boat is in Louisiana at the parents getting bottom paint and last bit of touching up before I drag it over. Have more access to tools and lifts and room to work on two boats.

Is there a direct replacement available for steering or a way to grease the 86 is a pita to steer and I am a big guy. The way it is could never the the gf drive at cruise. Do I just have to pull it and measure?
Again thank you both for the info.

Also I see people post pics I am trying to figure that out and maybe start a thread just on the whole thing motivates me a little more when I am accountable.

Disconnect the steering cable from the steering arm on the transom shield. Then see if the drive moves easily back and forth or if the cable itself is bad. It's common for the steering fork bushings coming up through the transom shield to corrode and cause the steering to bind.

Yes, it's a 305.

Impossible to say what changed from D to E model without checking all the parts to see what's different.
