Ok, I'll try that stuff tonight after work. I can't find an actual manual that shows this stuff. I got the parts catalog....

Ok, just got to it today. I cleaned each carb, let it sit, sprayed with carb cleaner. Lubed the linkage to the throttle lever and choke. The starter solenoid wasn't pushing up reliably, I cleaned that up and lubed it as well.
I figured out the push key choke and that actually works reliably. After 2 tries with starter fluid, I remembered to prime it, then it started right up! I ran it for about a min, turned it off waited a min and tried it again. Success! Repeated this 6 or 7 times with zero issues, and no starting fluid. While it runs, if I push the key in, it kills the motor immediately. So we know the choke solenoid is working.

So now some running help. I took some video of the throttle linkage to see if I need to tighten it up (I'm assuming I do) it seems to stick on a high idle. I can go push the lever back with my hand and slow it down significantly and it'll stay there, but once I adjust the throttle from the controls, it returns to the high idle position when I bring it back to neutral.

Let me know if you see something. The limit screws aren't touching so it doesn't look like that's an issue. Maybe need to clean and lube the track it runs on (at the bottom)?

Raise the fast idle lever.-----Push key in WHILE cranking it over.

Fast Idle Lever? I think the control boxes from 1980 till about 1990, didn't have a dedicated idle lever, but used the 'pushbutton to disengage the gearshift from the throttle lever' system.

There is a very specific "link and sinc" procedure that MUST be followed for Towers to run properly. Check the manual or FB sites.
Here, in spring, a good running 115 Tower is worth upwards of $1500, so it's worth it to get it set up right.

BTW, I'll be going down the same road as you, having just this spring bought Mariner 6624867, a 1985 90 hp.

Idle speed is adjusted with the cable disconnected. Once it is set, the cable length is adjusted to provide a slight preload thus ensuring the linkage is against the idle stop screw.

I think there should be a washer under that nut to remove the slack, either way tighten it up.

That throttle linkage must be tightened to remove that play. If the nut will not tighten more, use a washer to remove the play.

Great, thank you for guys for all the help. I'll adjust the idle and linkage later today hopefully. I'll keep y'all posted. I guess it's promising enough that I'll start working on the interior! 😄
