Re: New to me tow vehicle

My first car was an '88 mustang 2.3l 4 banger, traded a broken dirtbike for it. That car was what got me interested in mechanics, through my highschool years I'd pull the motor for fun. After pretty much rebuilding the car, I let it go for $100 because I had nowhere to keep it. Some may say i'm an idiot for letting it go that cheap, but my knowledge of mechanics more than makes up for any time/money put into it:)

I never said I didn't like Fords!

My first car was a '64 Falcon 2door Hardtop with the HiPo 289. I too learned how to build motors and suspension with that car.....I owned it for 12 years before selling it for $3000 to purchase my first Jeep......the rest is history.

ClassyGlassy, I have a new-found respect for you. Throughout the thread it seemed like you were just bashing, I know otherwise now, and my apologies for thinking that. Lately i'm stressed because I'm not able to get my boat in the water. (remedy-ing an obsolete shift linkage/ L/U problem) sorry for venting, but I feel iboats members are my older brother of the boating world. Always there when you need help or advice. Cheers all. And many thanks.

Re: New to me tow vehicle

Thanks for the respect.....

I wasn't bashing, I just wanted you to know of the known problems I've seen with Explorers and the issues I've dealt with first hand! My first car was a Ford and I even raced a Pinto Ministock for a couple of years.......the only reason I drive a Chevy right now is because I got this '87 Suburban from the second owner, my father-in-law, for $1500! My dad drives a 2004 Ford F250 Superduty and I will be purchasing it from him in the next couple of years when he decides to buy his next new truck! We keep things in the family around here..........

Thanks again,

Paul

Re: New to me tow vehicle

I have had three Explorers for company autos. I have put over 175K on each one and just got the fourth new one last month. I also have pulled my previous boat an 18.5Ft I/O with each and never had a break down due to towing. They all had the towing package and the SOHC V6 4.0L ran good and had very little problems. Maybe I have good luck. Say what you want but I think they are good little SUV's. My new boat will be too much for it as if us over 1000lbs heavier and I won't risk the chance of an emergency stop.

Re: New to me tow vehicle

Interesting info on the 8.8 in Explorers. I wonder if the set up is the same with the Mustangs. My 8.8 experience comes from them, and even last night at 12:00am I was knee deep in gear lube getting my Mustangs rear back together.

Had a shim issue, took out half dozen teeth on the ring gear, and cracked a few on the pinion, and the car still ran mid 12s at the race track on slicks. :D Has steeper gears now, and will get abused some more come Friday.

My brother has a 2006 Explorer Limited. Not sure on the newest body style, but so far it seems to be a good truck. Time will tell.

Re: New to me tow vehicle

We had an 01 Explorer 5.0L AWD Eddie Bauer edition. It was a decent vehicle, but it was a former "program vehicle" from up North. The whole frame was rust, brakes rusted, etc, etc... it wasn't completely Fords fault. Other than the crusted under-carrage, we enjoyed it. A few minor things went wrong, like the dpfe sensor, egr, and an o2 sensor. I never used it to pull with so I can't comment there.

We traded it with 80K on the clock, but I still miss it when it snows. It was a bull dog in the snow!! A thristy bull dog, but I could really care less about gas mileage.
