Re: New to the forum just got started on a major resto

I know you have good power plant, but I would consider a re-power (convert to Merc of Volvo) f you are going to do a full gut resto... The engine-mount/transom set-ups are completely different for an OMC Stringer... So you could be rebuilding the stern-side deck structure, engine mounts and transom if your engine or drive fail and you can't find good replacement parts...

I have an old OMC Stringer drive sitting on my back patio if you need any parts... (I tried to give it to the local dealers and they wouldn't even take it for free).... :)

Re: New to the forum just got started on a major resto

The thought of a merc alpha 1 gets me all sorts of excited and believe me since I first realized this much work needed to happen I have been thinking about it. There is a ton of geometry involved in a change like that and a lot of money. I haven't had time to research the cost of a used unit but I will also need the manifolds and risers. Lots of money and I am gonna be in it pretty deep now. I will be looking through Cl and be keeping my eyesopen for one. I wish I was closer to you I would take you up on that offer.

Not sure if you placed you US composites order yet. but something worth checking out that saved me some cash.
41/2 gal of boat building fiberglass resin

I spent about an hour talking to him in the parking lot where i met him to pick up resin. Got 12gals for $200. Seems like a pretty straight up guy and the resin doesnt appear to be "BAD". I have used some already and no issues to speak of.

I see no issues with it. I got 3 buckets total: 1 still sealed and the other 2 were open but the resin appeared to be fine. I havent used all that much yet, but im hoping to change that this weekend with fri-mon off work. No MEKP though, I just ordered it from Us composites. O'reilys by me had it in stock.

Guys...Polyester Resin DOES have a shelf life between 3 months and 2 yrs. A LOT depends on how it was stored, Temps etc...
I'd be careful. Momma always said...

WOG, I did some searching before I bought it and all I really came up with was if it isn't clumpy or crystalized, then it should be fine. Most concerns and issues were with expired MEKP. I know "should" being the key word. The little that I have used seemed to harden just fine. I mixed up the buckets real good with power mixer on my drill as well.(not sure if that matters but it made me feel good) I made batches from both open buckets and in all my little expierence it seemed fine. I haven't seen any actual facts on paper about it besides mostly other forums, just wondering if you had any literature that you have come across about it.

rykersdad1, sorry if I derailed your thread a little.

I have been looking around and my have found a possible donor for a possible re power. the boat actually looks better than mine. might do the switch because the wife wants to keep the bayliner then sell the old hull and drive train to recoup some money
Trailer and boat for price of trailer

That's a nice i-beam trailer. Could be a nice deal there.

I'm not after the trailer mine is good. i just want the power plant i am gonna call and make an offer on just the boat. i think i went from doing some minor repairs to completely redesigning my boat. In the event i get this alpha one i am gonna be asking a ton of questions.

You should NEVER mix resin with power tools. It WILL introduce bubbles into the mix and that's a big NO NO!!!!
Just remember that there's more to it than how it APPEARS. Chemicals ARE Chemicals.

Re: New to the forum just got started on a major resto

I would try to get the boat for $500 just from the sounds of it the guy doesn't know what he is doing and probably sunk a ton of money into something he now feels is a money pit. I base that off of the fact he says the distributor has come loose from the block umm that's either needing a new distributor or just missing the hold down and bolt. I doubt anyone would pay 2k for that trailer, but if he believes it use it to your advantage and tell him you will buy the boat and haul it off and he can still sell the trailer for 2k and it will be easier to sell without this junk hull on it. you might start off by asking him questions like when did he get it how often did he use it. Sort through all the BS and determine your strategy from there. If it has been sitting r for sale for more than a year then cut the total price in half and start negotiating from there. A boat without a trailer and drivetrain is useless so you might as well plan on cutting it up and disposing of it. With the trailer and no drivetrain you might get $500 for it. So figure that into your high end cost.

Hope this helps

Re: New to the forum just got started on a major resto

i am only paying 300 for it and he has all the merc books. my dad went and looked at it today and is sending me some pictures. i have already started and am way far into my bayliner project but from what i have seen this boat is gonna be one worth fixing up as well. i set out looking for a donor but my have just found a whole new boat. i love the lines on the eclipse 232 and the larger size. I have to get the money to him and get it all done but hopefully it works out. looks like my bliner is gonna have to keep its stringer and probably stay on the trailer a lot while i take the wellcraft out. lol

ok i am working up an order to us composites. can someone please tell me exactly which csm and cloth i need to do the stringers and floor and the furniture. i am not sure exactly what 1708 is.

BTW i have decided to stick with the stringer drive in the bliner and my dad and i are getting the wellcraft 232 eclipse to keep at his house near the coast.

50" 1.5 oz CSM 50" 1708 Biaxial Cloth. Its 170z cloth with 3/4 oz mat sewn to the back of the cloth. For Transom and Tabbing the deck you should use CSM tabbing and then 1708. Transom should get 2 full layers of 1708 With CSM. Stingers just need 2-3 layers of 1708. the first link in my signature below has some good info for you.

got an order in to marinepartshouse.com new ball gears, impeller kit, transom seal, and tilt clutch seal kit. that should have the stringer good as new. hopefully the wife gets off early today so i can go finish my demo and start measuring 5 times and cutting twice. or something like that. might get some pics of the progress this evening if i get the chance to work on it.
