I got a 1991 15hp 2 stroke mercury that I keep having issues with. It runs rough at half throttle but it runs fine just fine at idle and it also runs fine at full throttle. Any ideas what it could be? It has fairly new ignition components all replaced around the same time. Carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt.

Has new reed valves. It seems to be timing related, like it is not advanced enough, this model has the mechanical timing advance, the arm that controls it has been cleaned and lubricated and seems to move freely. What else can affect the timing advance on this? flywheel and key are ok, the stator and trigger were replaced at the same time, the switchbox was replaced shortly before that, all less than 1yr old. The switch box was replaced because the old one was dropping spark after it got hot and would not start back up. The stator and trigger were replaced in an attempt to fix the miss at half throttle. All ignition parts are aftermarket bought from ebay

I would assume a fuel problem before spark or timing. As for timing i believe you could hold it at half throttle and mess with the timing by moving the mechanism that advances it, of course being careful. But for fuel I would try pumping the bulb and seeing if that fixes it, and then i would re check the carbueretor.

I will also say, I am not super knowledgeable on these motors but i have noticed from owning one and seeing videos that they do seem to like to run a little rough in between full throttle and idle

Check that carb again. 99 times of a 100…it’s the carb. Check the diaphragm too.

Other things would be the obvious ones…like bad fuel, primer bulb the wrong way round, vent closed on tank, spark plugs. Be one of the above.

Carb opening is usually synched with a particular spark advance. Has this been checked?

Normally at about 1200RPM, the fuel for the engine transitions from the idle jet to the main jet. Is this where the roughness occurs? If so, the idle mixture could be a bit lean.
