Wow is this going FAST.

I don't know how much your spending, but a survey can be a very good thing.

Sometimes they do go fast. I stopped by a local marina to see what they had, and they showed me a boat ( see signature) that a customer was selling. Turned out I knew the seller - he'd owned the boat from new. I spoke to the mechanic, and the marina owner took me out for the water test drive. I just knew it was the right one and bought it a few days later. No regrets!

Different situation, eh? You personally knew the seller, and it seems you based your decision, at least partially, on that relationship. You spoke to a mechanic, which isn't a survey or an independent mechanical inspection but still better than relying on your own (new2boating?) experience.

IMHO, a 2nd set of eyes looking over a substantial (don't know if that's the situation here) purchase that's completely different from anything most new buyers have bought (myself included) is a good idea.

OK Here's the update for today's visit to the boat. We got there and man she looked beautiful. I pushed and tapped on everything that could possibly hold moisture and there was no indication of rotten wood or soft spots anywhere. She fired right up. So the apprehension is gone and feel totally confident in this purchase. I should be a boat owner this week.

If you know boats and know what to look/listen for, then you may be OK. If you don't (like me!), an inspection might be a couple hundred bucks (male deer!) well spent. If you really like the boat, settle on a price, subject to no major structural/mechanical issues on inspection.

I guess some people would say it's going fast but we are getting a great deal on this boat and I feel like we can't pass it up. I've looked it over twice and the owner is very open and honest about the boat. He took us out on the lake for a nice loing ride and she is smooth and strong. For 2500 bucks I hate to pass it up.

Then all the analysis has been done so go grab it before someone else does then you'll kick yourself for not moving on it sooner.

I say buy it. I bought an 88 Sea Ray 23' Cuddy two months ago. I paid $8000 for it and don't regret it a bit. It was my neighbor's boat and he cared for it like a crazed monk. Was it above blue-book? Sure. But you could eat off the bilge, and the maintenance records show continual, diligent, uninterrupted upkeep for the last 25 years. It's a trailered boat, but after 24 hours afloat there wasn't a single drop of water in the bilge (I take it out and spend the night on it occasionally). Even the teak has been brushed and oiled monthly. Trust me, if your "new" boat has been cared for, it's worth the money and you'll be glad you got it. There are a few boats out there where the owner seems to literally have stopped time. When you find one, grab it.

Best of luck. Hope you like yours as much as we like ours.

Eh, if it's only $2,500 then I'd probably jump.

yeah we're setting everything up for this week. Insurance and everything associated with it. We were talking about taking it out of the slip and trailering it back and forth but last night the wife and I were out and decided to drive out to the marina. She loves it out there and wants to be able to have easy access to the water so it looks like we will be keeping it in the slip.
Pullin it souds like you got a great boat. This one needs a new top and some work on the seats but it is solid and sound. I cant wait to post some pics. You guys should post some pics of your boats. I'd love to see them...

Hello Everyone,
Sorry I haven't posted pics sooner but I've been busy enjoying the boat. My wife and I hated to pay the slip fees so we decided to pull the boat out. Then we needed to get something to pull the boat. We went to Toyota just to "see what they had" lol. We ended up leaving with a 2013 Sequoia 4X4.
Well let me know what you think. I'll have to post a pic of the new ride also.

Dave,
Would like to see some pictures. Funny how deciding to buy a boat leads to many other expenses. Here is my story. Live in Canton,MI and water ski once per year for past 5 years. Love it so decided to buy a boat looked at craigs list on Sunday in October and found a Bayliner 175 for $9,500 (2008) This thing is in great condition. Always hoisted up when not used an only run 12-14 times per year (6 months). Well I went to see it on that Tuesday, ran it around with the owner then came back (with $9,500 cash) and had the owner take me water skiing. I brought m brother in law who knows boats and he said it was a great buy. This man kept his house, garage, cars yard in similar immaculate shape. I bouth it that Thursday and promptly put it into storage after I had the local marina go over it in detail, Drive alignment, Impeller, winterization, transportation, shrink wrap the works. $1300 bill for that. My wife and I decided to sell our beautiful big house that was too big for us really (3,740 ft) and buy something closer to a lake. We found something 45 minutes away and are 5 minutes from 3 lakes. We purchased that $185,000 + expenses of course. I then needed something to pull the boat. I looked for another two months and just purchased a 2007 GMC Envoy $8,000.

So that little boat has just caused me to spend $9,500+$1,300+$185,000+$8,000 and counting. I see why they say boats are not cheap!
