new to the site need advice pls

hello fellow boaters
I am new to boating
I am planning to buy a 2004 16 ft bayliner
it has a 70 hp 4 stroke suzuki with 50 hours on it
it comes with two downriggers
I am paying 7500 for it

that as big as I can fit in my garage
I am planning to use it for crusing and fishing
in the river and some lakes mostly river
my question is would this set up work for crusing and fishing and how does the price sound, any advice would be greatly appreciated
especially for those that own 16 ft bayliners

I also got him to throw both downriggers in the deal
he won't take a penny less

i am up north canada and when is all said and done
money exchange+taxes@ the boarder I am looking at 9000

I like the boat but unsure if I am making the right move

bud......$9000 is too much.....i think its a little under powered....

the new bayliners are around 12K and payments are a buck fifty ish a month

if your importing.....really shop around....this season is gonna see a rash of boats for sale cheeeeeeep !

i am in vancouver bc
and i have been looking around for a bit
boat prices up here are a bit high as compare to the states
I just sold my malibu 175 with a 150 suzuki
too big to fit in my garage and a little older (86)

so I got to stick with a 16 footer

my logic was buy a little newer and perhaps more quality time on the water
the 9000 range is cause all the exchage+ fees @ the boarder
can't get around that

so in your opinion that 70 is a bit underpower?
I don't do any water skiing just a little cruzing and a bit of fishing
I really appreciate your imput guys

Did you find that on Craiglist? There are quite a few in Wash.,Oregon and Cal. that are WAY better deals. Too bad the our $ took a big hit last week, deals were really good before that.

but i knew that was not gonna last
I have decided to hold on and look some more

What's your idea of "cruising?" How many people/animals will be cruising with you?

I had a 17'9" Lund Pro Sport, it was too small for the main lake when it was rough. I knew it would never flip (can't say I'd feel the same way about a Bayliner, but who knows, maybe its a double-hull filled with styrofoam too?) but it was still just not enough boat to convince you you'd be fine unless you'd be boating for years.

To me, down-riggers say deep water...deep water says big swells if the weather turns...so are you going to be out there in deep water when the weather does turn? If so, I'd say the boat's too small, unless that deep water is near shore/your berth.

I never did much "cruising" in my Lund. It wasn't that it couldn't do it, but its not exactly a comfy boat for such activity. Cruising, to me, needs to be on a Pontoon or a Cruiser, not a bow-rider that's better suited to a ski tower.

I appreciate your need to keep it in the garage, but as I said at the beginning, what's your idea of cruising?

yeah i live in an island city by nature
we are suronded by water
rivers and yeah the fishing is good at the mouth of the river
where you enter the ocean
is not far you could probably get back to safe heaven in 5 to 8 min
so the swells are not that bad but i hear you the weather can turn quick

i have heard that bow riders can take a bit of water in the front
depending on the weather but i guess a bow cover helps

crusing with the family 3 max 5
have you heard of double eagle boats?
great little boats for the west coast waters

FWIW, a bow cover might help, mine didn't really. Also consider what happens to the freeboard at the transom when you move all of your 5 people into the stern to close up the bow in rough weather. You can't always ensure the deepest part of the boat is facing the swell, and, use that 5-8 minute straight line to safe harbor.

Also, consider what happened to me once...while trying to get back in from rough weather my overheat alarm decided to go off. It turned out to be a lower unit gasket (IOWs, nothing related to anything I was doing at the time) but it meant I could only go a short distance and then shut the motor off for it to cool.) Dealing with this in rough water was no fun.

Where do you boat?

I'm partial to an aluminum hull as I try to hit the Fraser a couple times a year and am pretty much guaranteed to hit something (sand bars move). But my use is more fishing than anything. Going out in an hour or so.

But I'd keep looking on Seattle & Bellingham Craigslist. Picked my current boat up from just east of Tacoma. Buddy was also buying a bike so we got both in one trip. Fees weren't bad but our dollar was closer. Just make sure there is a visible VIN on the trailer or you have to go through some hoops with ICBC.

And I don't think our dollar is staying down. I'd expect it to perk up a bit.

hey guys
well i decided to go and check the bayliner out
definitely not for the waters up here
nice boat a few minor scratches and a small whole in the rear seat
the outboard was really nice only thing i saw was it had a bit of a dent on the skeg guess the guy forgot to pull up the motor before pulling the boat out of the water
Tacklewasher I also do the fraser river
around steveston and as well the other side around UBC
I am keeping my eyes open on craigslist
something will come up

and I have had one story that Iwill never forget lol
so I know that dealing whith boat problems in rough water is no fun.
