Greetings!

This is my first post on your forum.
I found your site based on a search for building plans for an
outboard motor stand to mount the Johnson 3 my wife inherited
from her late father. It originally belonged to her grandfather who,
gave it to her father. I know nothing about outboard motors but have
been fascinated with them since I was a child.

I plan on buying the materials tomorrow and build the stand for it.
Once erected, I would like to know what I need to do attempting to clean and
possibly get running. It has been on laying on it's side for the last 25 years under a
work bench in the basement. The basement was very clean and dry.

It appears to be all in tact.
A red builders' plate has the following information:

Model: JW-11
Serial Number: 1211720
Johnson Motors
Waukegan, Ill

I look forward to discussions with you gents in the future.

Thank you.

welcome to the site, i am fairly new to this forum myself, but it looks like you have a nice little 3 horse . i cant see the condition of the motor in this pic yo say how to clean it up , but to get her running after being stored for a good while there is a great article written on this forum called "how to awake a sleeping outboard " i do not have the link but i will try to find it or maybe someone else will beat me to the punch.

It might make sense to lube the cylinders with oil through the sparkplugs.

I would check to see if spark is present, then check to see if gas is getting from the tank to the carb - and then to the cylinders.

I always start my motor up in the spring with a small shot of gas to the cylinders through the spark plug. But I would make sure before you try that method to make sure the cylinders have at least some 2 stroke oil. Maybe make your gas a little rich on oil to start with.

Also assuming you get it running make sure its pumping water properly out the pee hole on the top of the motor. Running it dry could ruin the motor pretty quickly.

Welcome to iboats !!

FYI ... your motor is a 1955 model ... and before you start tinkering with trying to get it running, I'd recommend:

Hi, I also inherited a 1955 Sw-11 Johnson outboard....but may have a problem...carb has been cleaned, and it runs ok for a short time but gets hot pretty fast and then shuts down...I'm not sure where this Pee hole on the top of the motor is? I'm just thinking this might have to do with why the motor is getting so hot? Would you be able to point my in the right direction? or have any pics?

Thanks so much

There is no "tell tale" stream on that engine. The cooling water exits halfway down the leg from the little spray holes.

You need a new water pump impeller, or a kit. It's an easy fix.

GREAT little motor. I own two.

I'm really not a motor guy, but I just wanted to say welcome and I hope you get her running:)

Ditto on getting some lube into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and replace the impeller. Get a compression tester and a spark tester (both very useful tools to own) and see what you've got!
