Just got a new truck and it came with a new trailer hitch mount. i purchased a new 2inch ball also.

What is funny the trailer hitch came with a sleeve. Im pretty sure the sleeve goes in the shaft where the new ball will be bolted on.
problem is when i screw the new ball in it tightens and closes the locking washer, but its not tight enough.

The ball turns freely, never seen that before. The sleeve that came with the new hitch is keeping it from being tighten all the way.

Should the ball turn freely or should it be not be able to turn.

im confused any help.

Could it be that the nut is running out of threads before it is tight? If so use a large thick flat washer and try it again... Also make sure the bolt doesn't have a shouldered area. But you could also use a flat washer with that too...

You say you are new so please don't take this as an insult. In most cases one has to hold the ball while tightening down the nut. Some come with flat areas for a large wrench others you have to use a pipe wrench to hold.

Your ball attaches to the ball mount Fulton Trailer Hitch Ball Mounts - iboats which then slides into the receiver.

If you must, do what gm SAID TO GET IT TIGHT.

Re: new trailer hitch mount.

I assume you are talking about the sleeve to use a 3/4" shanked ball with a hitch that has a 1" hole? Like this:
Hitch Ball, 2" Ball, 2" Shank Length, Class II - Seasense 50017154 - iboats
Be sure the sleeve is not longer than the hitch is thick. If it is the nut will tighten against the sleeve and not the hitch. You can cut or grind the sleeve shorter if it is. Or try returning it and buy a ball with a 1" diameter shank to match your new hitch.

Good catch Lurch. I mostly misread what he was saying.

I went through this last night myself, I needed to grind down the sleeve so it was more flush with the draw bar as before I cranked down the bolt and the ball was spinning in the sleeve.

agaldamez, Stop, check your new 2" ball. The shank sounds too long or the sleeve too long, yes, but most 3/4 " shanks are only rated for 3500 lbs.
2003 Rinker 212 Captiva 3100+, add trailer, gas and all the gear and your more like 5000+
You need a 1" shank, rated for your total weight.
