New (used IL6 115)

I have recently recieved a nice free IL6 115 '84, It needs a water pump, but that seems to be all the mechanical work it requires, now the 18' Struery it came on needs a little more to be sea worthy. My big question is, The motor has neither a water temp, or pressure gauge. I would like to put both on the unit. the problem is I only see one hole to use. On the cover plate there is a plug I can remove, figured this would be a good place for the pressure gauge, where can I install the temp sensor. (now on the same note with a twist, the prior owner had a jury rigged sensor on the motor, no gauge though, The sensor was held in place with a piece of flat stock in which it was screwed into and the flat stock was then held in place with one of the head cover bolts. The sensor was then held tight against the cover plate, I guess this would get you a metal reading, would that work or is there a better fix) Thanks

hello<br /> yep thats how the temp sensor works. its a standard universal kit. the tapped plug on the cover is for water pressure.

So its not like a car at all, the sensor never touches the fluid, (water) in this case. Its a measure of the metal temp, not the water temp.

Correct. The factory overtemp horn sensor was tapped into the block next to the #1 spark-plug hole.<br /><br />-W

Hey guys, I have a '79 140 that I would like to add temp and pressure to some time in the future(when $$ allows). Are there kits for doing this to my motor? Or are the sensors and guages standard sets?<br /><br />What is the best way to run the additional wires out of the motor? Do I just keep them close to the motor harness and then run them up to the dash with the rest of the wires like the tach?<br /><br />Thanks, CG

Clams, I do not see were the original horn sensor would have been, Was it throught the cover on in the area of number one, or was it on the side not the back, Did all of the 115's come with one.

If you look at the cover near the #1 spark plug the hole cut into the cover for the plug should look different than the round holes on the other 5. That area to the right of the plug is where the sensor gets tapped into the block.<br /><br />If #1 has the same round hole as the rest, then your block was never made to take one.<br /><br />And to superglue - yes and yes. And the harness may have an additional wire or two that you can exploit.

2cycle,<br />I was just in the right place at the right time, Heard a fellow firefighter say he was just going to junk the boat and was looking for some place to give it to for scrape. I told him I'd take it , went over after duty the next day and pulled it home. Trailer was buried up to the hubs, 1 foot of leaves in the boat and covered in mold, said he hadn't used it in 7 or 8 years. Once I got it home and pressure washed it it didn't look to bad, the deck is real solid, but the pain on the whole boat is really bad ( could evven be house paint put on with a course brush, from top to bottom, Motor started up with a little encourage meant, trim works great, just needs a water pump No p from the hole, I also had to put a stator on due to the wires being all dry rotted, I had no idea what a had found until I was told that the motor was a pretty stong and liked unit by a couple of friends. Hopefully the boat is just as solid, I hav'nt really looked at the stringers yet.

Cory43,<br /><br />Sounds like a find to me. You should love that motor. I have the older mid 70s 1500. Yours has the modern ignition and power trim. Good luck with it. Keep us updated.
