Hello Everyone! I hope to be a pontoon owner this evening. I have rented pontoons in the past but have decided to buy one finally. I am going to look at a 2002 Sylvan Mirage 822 that is in great shape. Guy is trying to get rid of it for cheap due to a divorce and needing to get rid of assets, lol! What should I be looking for as far the pontoon is concerned? Also, it is being sold with a 50HP Johnson 2 stroke.

Look it over like anything for excessive wear. Make sure trailer looks good, bearing not hot if it was towed, not bent like it was wrecked or jack knifed. Boat, not huge marks from hitting something, shoddy patch jobs in toons, no soft spots in floor, carpet and upolstry condition should be obvious. Look under the dash, hope there is not some rat nest where some one went to hacking and spicking wires that will be trouble for you. All the switches and running lights work, live well if it has one. The motor will be like any outboard. Look it over pull the hood assess outside condition. If you really want to get into it pull a plug or two and peek at the cylinder walls. Make sure it engages and does not jump in and out of gear. That it goes wide open and that it can come back down and idle, that it can idle and not shut off, does not stumble. Gears do not grind or pop while your doing anything other than maybe small amount at a shift but none is what you wnat. Oh and DO NOT buy it without test driving it. I don't care if this means yall have to drive a half hour to the water. Any of the motor things are not a deal breaker depending on your skill or ability just barging power.

Pay close attention to the upholstery, especially the top of the seat backs. If you see brown stains, cracking, seams splitting (anywhere), or very stiff vinyl, the material is shot. You could purchase 2 used 50hp Johnson's for what it will cost to replace that fabric.

After that, make sure the wife is agreeable to the sale and sale price, OR, make sure her name is not on the boat's title. It should be easy to figure out why, but I see guys get screwed over on occasion because of it.

So I decided to go for it and purchased the boat. It definitely needs some TLC as it has been sitting out for the last 6 months uncovered. Floors are solid and motor is in good shape. 3 of the corner seats have the seams starting to separate but that hopefully won't be too bad to fix since its not split wide open and exposing the foam.

My biggest concern right now is the boat does not have a cover and will be stored in the water for the next few weeks. How can I get a cover over the boat with it sitting in the water? Does anyone have a link to one I can purchase ASAP? Once again, it is a 22' Sylvan Mirage.

Until you can find the right cover just throw a couple of huge tarps over it. That will buy you quite a bit of time to get a proper cover.

Would be surprised if Sylvan had a cover for a 12 year old boat but start with them, it is that or local custom made.

You will have to install the snaps, those are specific to the boat they are made for.
They build the boat, put the cover on then install the snaps on the boat to match the cover so you aren't going to be able to just get a cover that goes right on.
