i got a new empeller for my 25hp mariner made by japanese and i put it in and now when i finally get the powerhead started it wont pumpwater, but it spits alittle, i have it in a barrel of water, (is there a certain depth in water to make the water pee out of the pee hole?) i dont know, another question as well when my powerhead finally starts, its starts up very smokey then it clears up and the idle dies out

you only need the water to cover the intake but I would put it up to cavitation plate at least or use hose and muffs. Water will flow in a few seconds when thermostat warms enough to open if impeller installed properly. Did the motor run ok before you changed the Impeller ?A closed choke will cause a bit of smoke which is normal...maybe you should let it warm up a bit before shutting off the choke and it may idle ok.

If you haven't already done so, check the tell tale. They often get blocked. Run some fine wire or weed whacker string up the tell tale hose.

Is the pickup tube seated well top and bottom? did it pump water before the new installation?

Did you install the key that locks the impeller to the drive shaft? If not, the shaft will just spin inside the impeller. Did you make sure the water pipe in the leg mated properly with the one up inside the upper housing. If not, water never makes it through the engine. Running on muffs is not a good indicator of pump operation since water main pressure is forcing water through the engine rather than it being pumped.

so i just got done trying to stick a wire throught the pee hole but i got nothing, its like the wire just bottom out on something hard.. i took the thermostat out and put in boiling water and it popped open quickand yes i put the key way on the drive shaft for the empeller. would it be in my best interest to take the lower unit back off and to inspect again. because the old empeller was all torn up could there be a chance the a piece of empeller is stuck in the pickup tube,

Did you try running in a container of water with the thermostat & cover removed? I'd only do this for short time in order to see if water is being pumped.

If you don't see water flow, I'd be tempted to drop the lower unit again. You can then force water through the water uptake tube. Remove the thermostat while doing this and it will backflush crud out of the system.

You can also then check the impeller/pump. I haven't tried this, but somebody here mentioned using a drill to spin the drive shaft (with lower unit in water) - this can check the water pump function.

Having the correct impeller is very important. If it doesn't get close contact with top/bottom/sides, then it won't pump well.

Re: new water empeller but no water coming out

well i just got done running water and vinager through the thermostast housing a water came through the pee hole, then i tried running water through the other part of the thermostat and and it filled up and let sit for about a min or two and it started draining, when it drain i pulled the lower unit and the water pumpand there was salt deposits all in the pump housing and around the impeller. i was running out of time but does anyone think that the drill on the drive shaft would tell me if the pump works should i keep the pick up tube on as well. any suggestions, especially on the water jacket should i pull that off and cleans or can i put more vinegar or something different to flush it , would a pressure washer work with low pressure???????????
