Re: new water pump not working

havent water tested it yet but I am about 99% sure it was the O ring on the shaft. I got a new one installed it and it seems to be sealed up now. Will be taking it to the lake at lunch time today to check it. Thank you guys alot I owe you one. If it werent for you guys it would have went to the shop and I would have gotten charged an outragious amount just for an O ring.

yep the drive key is there. Im pretty sure I got it. It was the O ring inside the pump housing on thats on the shaft that was missing. I put it in and it seems to be pressuring up now but havent water tested yet.

Re: new water pump not working

well guys i water tested tonight again and nothing. just cant figure it out. if I put he water hose to the intake tube going to the powerhead water sxhoots through without problem so best I can figure it has to be something to do with pump? Will tear it down again in the morning and check it all out again. Ive had the lower unit off about 12 times now so it should go pretty fast. One thing i did notice is the kit that i got and the one that i pulled off is that the metal housing that the old pump had, had a bigger slit in it that fed to the copper tube going up to the power head and also the o ing on the diagam above isnt sealing the housing properly. Onthe top of the impeller it looked to me the O ring went there rather than on top of the plastic housing. It would seal right on top of it but if i put it on top of the impeller it seemed to hold pressure. I couldnt go by the old pump becausae I guess the guy I bought the boat from ran it dry so it was a huge mass of burnt up plastic and rubber when I pulled it off.

Go get another kit from another dealer and return this one IMO, it sounds like it's been messed up since the beginning.

I think you are on the right track, head gasket perhaps? Check to see it it's warped by holding it against a pane of glass.

Re: new water pump not working

head gasket looks ok?..... not real sure how to tell. there is no rips or tears.
thermostat is toast and also i noticed there is water coming out of the plate the water tell tale comes out of. I also found a piece of impeller rubber laying on the bottom under the #3 piston from the old impeller that was in there. the head doesnt seem to be warped and I cant see that its cracked anywhere. maybe change the gasket and cross my fingers that there isnt a crack in a piston sleeve?

Check the cylinder head cover gasket too, post pics of the head gasket if you can. Water might be getting in somewhere else, possibly exhaust manifold gasket.

Any image you need can be seen at shop.evinrude.com, quite handy, just go lookup your model and follow the menu on the left.

Re: new water pump not working

thank you so much for mentioning the exhaust manifold gasket i really think thats what it is. The old water pump that was in it stopped on me when i was out and exhaust was coming out of the tell tale.At first i thought it was steam but it wasnt. And yesterday when i was out there was water coming out of the manifold plate not very much but i could tell it wasnt sealed right. I checked the bolts and they were loose. I am going to go ahead and replace the head gasket since I already have it off and i am going to replace the exhaust gasket and the thermostat. Will keep you posted on the results as i go. And again a million thanks
