I bought a boat off an old woodworker/ tinkerer once. He had a elcheapo 12 volt ATV style winch mounted to a piece of hollow steel square stock that was big enough to slip over the winch tower on the trailer. You would put it on when you needed. No bolts just slipped over. I never used it on the trailer but I used that winch for all kinds of things.

aircraft cable is safer yet IF you maintain it
Never let it drop in the water
Engine store on the new cable and drum
Keep winch covered
And it will last almost forever!

Gee, isn't aircraft cable stainless steel? That stuff laughs at salt water, rain and the like, no?

Non metal rope / cable never kinks. Flat webbing lays flat with no care at all.
Gotta agree here, worked with steel cables for many years, never enjoyed using it. Flat strap for boat trailer and synthetic winch rope for my SxS....never an issue with either one.
