I am rebuilding my 1984 challenger 186pro bass boat. it sat for 5 years while deployed. boat cover got ruined and now deck and carpet is shot. I would love to put in a new deck and all new carpet. have figured out how to do the front deck and the rear deck with out removing the whole shell is it possable to do the main deck with out removing the top shell of the boat will try to add pics when i get home if i still have them on my CPU. if i can not do it with out removing the top shell can i repair the rotten spots some how? any advice would be helpful. I was thinking about cutting a piece of plywood to size and covering in cheap carpet till next winter so i do not miss out on much fishing this summer? how would that work out for a temp fix??????

I think you first need to check the stringers, Duff.

As for replacing the deck without pulling the top shell, I would do it in two stages.. .3/8" CD PW slabs for the first layer, followed by a second layer of overlapping 3/8" AC slabs epoxied over the first and screwed down with brass. Do not use Exterior grade. The epoxy won't stick. Use marine grade. Then a sealing layer of fiberglass.

Finally, no more of that #$%^&* carpet. It holds moisture and odor and is the reason your deck rotted in the first place. Use a rubberized material like Rino.

Good luck. Hope the stringers are okay. :)

Yup. They usually rot when the deck rots.:'(

I don't KNOW that your boat has stringers, but it probably does.
