I'm looking at repowering a 96 Whaler 17 Montauk. Boat will be used for fishing and hauling 1 to 4 (max) people, no skiing, and am considering the Yami F70 4 strk. Any ideas on that as adequate power. Anyone have experience using that new motor on about a 1000 lb. boat yet?

Re: New Yamaha F70

The hull is rated for 100hp. My concern is that the Yam 4-strk 90 is so heavy compared to what was on there ( 260lb 2strk Yam-90) +110 lbs., that I would look at the new F70 Yam at 260 lbs. Any experience with this new F70 and it's power?

Re: New Yamaha F70

All three Montauks we have had ended up with 70HP and performed well.

My last one, Sunshine III, used a Suzuki DF70 (about 350#). It was an excellent match, though Sunshine I was more seaworthy with a JohnnyRude 70.

Though rated for 100HP (400# on the transom) all Boston Whalers perform well with about 70% of rated power and adequately with as little as 50%. In the early 70s Boston Whaler powered many 16 and 17 models with Bearcat 55 4 strokes.

The F70 would do very well on your Montauk.
