I just traded my 93 foxbody for my 1st boat.

its a 87 ebbtide with the 170hp 470

it starts up great and everything but the bellow tube looks burned and is busted. I went to order a new one and a boat mechanic told me that they just don't break. He told me to check for a blown head gasket, do a compression test, water pump and check for melted pieces. Should I go ahead and get that bellow and try it in the water or check all that stuff 1st cause the boat seems to run great. Here is what I need its part #1

Do you think it's safe to put that new part on do a compression test then try it out on the water.

Well, that "Boat Mechanic" must not be..... (A boat mechanic)

If you have a burned exhaust tube connection at the riser, it is due to NO or insufficient water flowing into it.

Absolutely not.

A compression test has nothing to do with any burned exhaust components!

(Where do these "Boat Mechanics" come from?)


1. Get yourself an OEM service manual

2. pull the drive and inspect the drive bellows, and alignment.

3. while the drive is off, pull the lower and replace the raw water pump and housing.

4. remove the exhaust riser and replace the riser gasket (you'll be pulling it to replace the rubber hose coupling)

5. The 470 crowd will be in here with other "stuff" you need to do with your rather unique and obsolete engine.
(I would have just sold the car and bought a different boat......... but here you are!!)

No, they're rubber...they'll melt, or tear. I wouldn't use "break" as good descriptor.

With a boat of that vintage...I'd do at LEAST the following prior to getting underway:
1. Pull the drive. Replace the impeller/housing and all associated gaskets.
2. Check the stern bellows for cracking/tearing/signs of overheating
3. Check the alignment, gimbal bearing and pressure test the unit when you've got it back together.
4. When you have the replacement exhaust bellows check the water shutter (#6) for signs of overheating. If it's not there...start looking down the pipe and "up" the idle relief ports for the remnants, then install another.

After all is put together, start it on muffs. Watch the temp and verify the gauge using an IR thermometer.

When it's all warmed up, do your compression test.

OR...

Slap a new bellows on, dunk it, and take your chances...

There's no chance here.......replace that rubber without replacing the raw water pump and it will end up like the current one......

Unless that Mustang was junk, this will prove to be a HUGE mistake on your part. Sorry, but you jumped into a 25 year old boat, with an obsolete engine, that had reliability problems at best, expesive quirks at worst, and you have signs of it having gotten over heated. That is a BAD sign in that engine. Bad, horrible, actually. I hope you dodge a bullet, but that engine's got at least 5 more to fire at you. Good luck.

Can you post a link to the kit ill need for all the gaskets that has to be replaced. And is this a simple thing to fix or am I in trouble

Yeah you got some problems there. Looks like you had a severe overheat, which means that you probably have a bad head gasket now. You say it starts, well that is good. I would say Check that the reservoir is full, and hook up the muffs and start it for a short time. With the radiator cap off, look for bubbles in the coolant, then after it has warmed up a bit do your compression test, let us know the numbers. For sure the next thing to do is remove the outdrive and take a look and see if the waterpump tube is melted, and look for the shutter pieces. You will need to replace the entire waterpump and impeller, and if the impeller is not intact you will need to find the pieces, probably behind the front cap of the exchanger. You may be in for an new head gasket, but you could get lucky. No water test for you..... yet LOL. If you can get it running right, that boat should be pretty nice.

Where can I buy the rebuild kit that I need to fix my boat and is it worth doing it or should I look for a different motor.

You won't know till you do your basic diagnosis, like the compression check. You ca get the impeller pump kit here on i-boats. The fact that it starts and runs is a good sign.
