Newb questions on a 14' Barkley Young boat I'm considering buying...

Can anyone comment on this boat I'm interested in buying. Needs a good cleaning as it hasn't been in water for 2 seasons, but the guy said he will make sure everything works and it was always winterized properly.

The boat is a 1986 14 ft Barkley Young. The engine is a 50 hp Mercury of the same vintage. The motor has power trim/tilt and he owner says they were built in Toronto and bought out by Boston Whaler in the early 90's.

I'm looking for just something to cruise/sightsee around Lake Scugog and to fish with. I had originally thought of a party boat but that's too much money right now and I really just want something to float and get around for this/next season before moving up.

It comes with a trailer and the guy who has it seems to knows allot about boats, and says this is a great one for my needs. I know next to nothing about boats.

I can get it for 2 grand. To me that seems pretty reasonable...

Good deal?

BTW, can anyone provide me a link to more information on BY boats, nothing coming up on google...

Looks like a good deal to me. Especially since you're planning on upgrading. This rig should pretty much always be worth $2k in good condition.

Sounds reasonable, and the photos look good. Check that the transom is solid, and no soft spots in the deck. If possible have the current owner take you for a ride, which will serve the dual purpose of familiarizing you with the boat and demonstrating that it runs well and everything works.

X2 on the test drive, if they're not willing to do that, I would be more suspicious, but it looks like its in good condition. Also agree that it should hold its value pretty good.

OK, where do I start. I owned a 1985 14ft Barkley Young up until last year when I sold it for a larger boat. I had a 1993 Mariner 40hp on it. The boat is rated at 35hp so the 50 is somewhat overpowered. With the 40hp I could run 65kph on a light chop.

Very stable boat, excellent for fishing. Handles rough water very well but rides harsh in the rough water because of the mostly flat bottom.

That boat has been reconfigured, probably for the better. Original configuration had 2 bench seats, one at the back and one in the middle where the pedestal seats are now. You can see the remnant of it in the one photo. There was also a flip up bow seat with storage underneath. The console was originally mounted at the rear bench which made the boat very stern heavy which resulted in severe porpoising and a VERY small freeboard. Had to install trim tabs which worked VERY well.

Something to be aware of is water in the hull and a bad transom. The boat is constructed with an outer hull and "inner hull" with a foam core between the two. If there is any leak/seepage the foam core absorbs the water and can become very heavy. The large aluminum plate on the transom is suspicious. Tilt the motor up and place a knee on the lower unit. Put some weight on it and watch if the transom deflects AT ALL. There should be no movement.

Investigate how the pedestal seats are mounted. If they are just screwed into the floor they will not be secure. There is no wood structure under the floor (unless it has been added) so the seats will just be screwed into a thin layer of fiberglass that is bonded to a foam core.

Overall was very happy with the boat. Nothing bad to say about them really. This one looks in pretty good condition. Don't buy without a test drive. That can reveal alot about the motor and how the boat will behave with the 50hp on it.

Thanks so much. That was allot of great info! So your on Simcoe eh? Me too, but just in the process of moving to Scugog.
