NewB Questions

I have just purchased an 83 Capri with a Force 85 outboard. I have been reading this site for over a week and have found the answers to alot of my questions, except this one.

I am primarily using the boat for family fun, skiing, tubing and fishing. It is very slow out of the hole. The boat has the manual trim/tilt and I am wondering if the different pin positions will affect the performance.

I left the pin in the hole that the previous owner had selected. I know he only used the boat for fishing, so that got me wondering. Also, can anybody tell me what the differences are for the different pin positions and how they affect the performance of the boat?

Thanks everyone, if these questions have been asked, I could not find them with the search.

The pin position does effect the performance.
With the pin all the down,(or in), you will get a better hole shot.
You will sacrifice some speed, the lower you go with the pin.

Also, if the prop is damaged, it will hurt performance.
And you need the correct pitch prop for your load and use.

Does your boat have a tach?

If you replace the prop with a reduced pitch, it will help hole shot and be better for pulling tubes and skis.
A reduced pitch prop will allow the engine to rev higher, faster. So you need to make sure you do not over rev the engine. That is why I asked about having a tach.

So you need to spend a half hour in the boat experimenting with the different pin settings. Best to load the boat up with similar weight, how you will be using it, so throw the family and gear in there and head to the lake.

Also, the amount of weight in the boat, and weight distribution will severely effect the performance.

Reduce the weight, and relocate as much weight in the forward part of the boat as you can. Leaving the cooler, anchor, extra fuel can, extra people and gear, on shore, will help a lot.

After you determine the best pin position, you can decide if you will need a lower pitched prop.

How long is this boat??

One more thing. This post will probably be moved to the "Boat Topics" forum, as it is more of a boat setup question, than a motor repair question.

It does not have a tach but I plan to add one over the winter. I also plan to add a water flow meter. It is 15' (?), the prop is slightly damaged but after working a bunch of OT and stuffing the money in an envelope since January, nothing left to buy stuff after buying the boat.

So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that it makes it through the rest of the summer. I h

One more thing. This post will probably be moved to the "Boat Topics" forum, as it is more of a boat setup question, than a motor repair question.

I had it in the lake today and I don't think it has enough poop to pull my oldest son out of the water with all of us in it. He is still learning so I guess I should have tried it myself since I know how to ski. At any rate, it did pull my daughter out with everyone aboard, but she is only 12.

It does not have a tach, but I plan to add one. There are otehr things I will add over the winter, but right now I just want to play on it through the summer.

It is doing the same as others I have read however, it starts fine in neutral, but dies when I put it in gear. It does not idle at all. I changed plugs but the boat wouldn't start today so I changed back to the old ones on the spot. Still wouldn't start, so I had to hold open choke while my wife cranked it. It started right away, but it does not idle unless it is really warmed up.

I need to add a water flow meter, my buzzer does not work when I grounded it on the spark plug. So much to do, so little time off. Like I said, I hope it makes it to winter so I can fix a lot of this stuff. Thanks for the help and sorry for posting in the wrong area.
