I have a 1995 3.0 LX that I just got and while going through it I find it has no thermostat in it??? It now runs fine (after replacing the rusted through freeze plug).

Does it need a thermostat? I know on a car it holds the water in the rad long enough to cool off, but on an open system...would you need one?

Thanks

-Mike

yes, you definitely want a thermostat, otherwise your engine will run too cool.

with an open system which is also called raw water cooling because sea water is used to cool everything. An infinite supply of 80F or less water is constantly flowing through the engine, so it'll never warm up which is bad for combustion, fuel economy, power, and the oil.
