Re: Newbee Boater Question

Did he have water muffs on it? Or lower unit submerged in a barrel of water?

If no water, then impeller (vaned rubber thing that pumps cooling water) is toast for sure. That can happen in 5-10 seconds.

If no water, 2-3 minutes could easily be long enough to overheat the powerhead. What motor/hp? What rpm was he running it up to?

You say guy knows nothing about 2-stroke; did he at least mix 2-stroke oil into the gas?

Impellers CAN get smoked in seconds. Do you know that last time the impeller was changed? If you don't, then you should change it anyway.

3hp? What year? Model? Hell, at that size it could be air-cooled. I'm a lot less worried about powerhead damage now.

Ok it's water cooled. The most damage you could have done in that time was smoking the impeller. As you may have seen from your google search, they have rubble star shaped impellers that are a super tight fit in their housings. Run without water they can be damaged quickly. But it isn't a huge ordeal to replace and you should really replace it as a preventative measure every couple years anyway.

Re: Newbee Boater Question

On my very first launch I got rattled because I forgot to remove
transom straps and was holding up the launch ramp. I decided to get
out of the way in a hurry and motor idled from the water until the
the idiot operater realized this. (top of the ramp)

Probably less then 60 sec. So far no harm no foul.

But....on a motor that old definately replace it even if it
hadn't been run out of the water.

A NEWBIE BOAT TIP:

Spend some time on the Stupid Human Tricks forum.
You will learn a lot.:D
The sticky's at the top of every forum have a wealth of knowledge too.

Also their are no "stupid" questions here. We were all newbies once.
You might get a little good natured ribbing but this is a great bunch of
guys and gals who will be glad to offer advice.:)

If your towing your boat transom straps keep the back of the
boat on the trailer. In addition to the winch cable at the bow
you need a 2nd chain or cable that is bolted to the trailer and
attacted to the bow eye.
