New boater / old hot rodder with a question.

I've separated the upper and lower units and fear that I might have a problem with my lower unit.

Question: Currently, if I spin the vertical drive shaft, the prop shaft does not spin. Should the prop shaft spin if I spin the drive shaft?

while rotating the drive shaft clockwise (looking down) rotate the small splined shaft at the front of the drive clockwise and the clutch should engage the fwd gear thus turning the propshaft

  With that amount of damage I'd say you were running dry for quite a while... I would be pressure testing the Water Pocket Cover in the 'upper' (correct name 'Drive shaft housing')... It's a little plastic cover (that often gets overlooked) and uncooled exhaust (like what you would have had) caused it to melt, and then the gasket leaks, leading to more overheating.... You'll see it if you look up inside the drive shaft housing. It has the copper tube from the water pump housing go into it....

wish I could take credit for that, but this is a winter project that I picked up in the fall "on the cheap". Former owner says it had a blown head gasket. Wonder why.

I can just anticipate where this in going LOL. So to make sure everything goes back together properly this is what is going on; Dubs was right on. The little splined shaft is the lower shift shaft (attaches to a crank that slides the shift spool, [kind of like a transmission fork], that slides the gears back and forth to engage F & R). When rotated all the way clockwise it is in F, one step CCW is neutral and all the way CCW is R. When you put it all back together the male lower shift shaft (ss) slips into the female splined intermediate ss ( shaft with little "foot" on top in the driveshaft housing, [upper]). Everything goes back together with the gear housing (lower) in Forward. Hop in the boat and shove the control handle to WOT forward (if not there). That positions the upper ss coupler (little "C" channel in the bellhousing) straight forward. Make sure the little stainless steel washer is in place on the lower ss (they often fall off). Slip on the prop and turn the lower ss all the way clockwise and the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE, it should lock. Use a bungee on the prop to hold pressure to keep it locked in F. When you reassemble, make sure the intermediate ss is pointed straight ahead and everything should be OK. Sounds like you have the upper off too, so just make sure the I ss is pointed straight ahead. Hope that is not too confusing. OH! and if you need to turn the prop a little to get the driveshaft splines to line up, turn counterclockwise only. Good luck.
