Newbie ETEC Owner. What oils are okay to use?

I just took possession of my new (well new to me) 2010 Glastron GT-180 with a 150 HO ETEC on it. This is my first ETEC. I'm wondering what brands of 2-stroke motor oil are okay to run with it. Obviously, the BRP/Evinrude brand stuff is good, but what about other brands? What about the Mystick 2 Cycle Premium blend TC-W3 JT4 synthetic blend oil you can get at Bass Pro? That's easier for me to get than the BRP/Evinrude stuff and likely cheaper as well.

In the end, BRP/Evinrude is not an oil company so they obviously have one of the oil companies make their oil for them or just have whatever oil company they buy from package that oil company's premium blend oil in an Evinrude/BRP labeled bottle. In that case, the same oil could be sold under other brand names but at more reasonable prices than the expensive Evinrude/BRP stuff you get at the dealer.

Are all the high end 2-cycle oils pretty much the same in terms of quality or are some noticeably superior to others? What are the best and why?

If you read up on the history of the FICHT engines that preceeded the Etech, you can well imagine that BRP has put a ton of research and money into the oil question, and developed their own spec. Sure, it is made by somebody else---to BRP's specifications. Is there an acceptable substitute? Well maybe, but do you want to take the chance, considering what those things cost? Oil is cheap in comparison.

Did the selling individual tell you what the oil mixing logic is set for? You may need to take that engine to a dealer. He needs to tell you what setting the computer oil mixing logic is set to for the original (prior) owner. When that engine came from the factory, it was programmed to mix fuel/oil at a mix rate of 50 to one. The prior owner may have opted to have the computer changed- to run at a special mix rate of 100 to one-by an Evinrude dealer. This is a user option with the ETEC. When that reprogramming is done, you must run only the special Evinrude XD100 oil. So, first thing to do is to find out what setting the computer is currently programmed to. Then pick the appropriate oil.

That's interesting. I didn't know that.The EMM file says "TC-W3" under "Oil Ratio". What does that mean?

Good oil and good fuel are the two cheapest things you can buy for a motor. :joyous:

TCWIII or TCW-3 oils are rated for water-cooled two cycle outboard engines. It's different than air cooled two cycle motorcycles, for instance. Your computer will meter the oil to the correct ratio, depending on which factory setting the engine is set to. If it's set to the 100 to 1 ratio, that pretty much says you need to run the XD100. No other oil is rated to run that lean a ratio.

Will it indicate what oil ratio it's set to in the engine EMM file? All it said in the EMM file under Oil Ratio was TC-W3. If it's not in the EMM file I guess I'll have to read the owner's manual and figure out how to find out what oil ratio it's been set to.

I believe the XD 100 setting is not an oil ratio..... it is the o?l type to use. like the TCw3 setting... it is the oil to use ..not a ratio

That o?l is circulated inside the engine but not "mixed" per say like carbed or VRO engines .


in any event.... ALWAYS use XD100 o?l no matter how the EMM is programmed. you can get o?l shipped to you

I have been running my 2005 75 ETEC for 10 years now with XD 100 (it prevents the need to decarb. and with regular use of 2+4D you will have clean smokless and nearly odorless engine !
