Hi guys. New owner of a 1977 Wellcraft Airslot Bowrider, came with a 1980 (?) Evinrude 150 Sport. Only SN I could find is E150TRLCSR. Looking by the FAQ to other sites seems to be a 1980 or 1981 engine. If you can confirm, I would appreciate it.

Then, Q. The boat has two batteries, to start the OB. This engine has no alt? We (my brother and I) were told we have to charge the batteries 24 to 48 hours before every use. So the batteries never get charged?

Any links to tech manuals for this engine are very welcome.

Thanks.

Welcome aboard.

The best thing to do is purchase one of the manuals for your motor. This will be the best money ever spent.

All of these motors can charge the batteries. If your batteries are not charging the first thing I would look into is the regualtor/rectifier. When the motor is running what does the tach look like? is it erratic or normal. This is usally the first hint on where to begin.

Thanks J, thats why I want to positively identify the engine so I can get the right book. I didn't even know the year, but looking at the FAQ went to some links and I think is either 1980 or 1981... We don't have a working tach. I have to go over the gauges. But the engine was tuned (by a shop) and starts right up, idles regularly (as any outboard I would think).

I work a lot on my cars but this is my first experience with nautical engines.

Here is another way, Fire up the motor then remove the battery leads from the battery, the engine will still stay running, use a volt meter and measure the voltage coming off of the leads.

I have a sealoc manual for mine and it covers about 20 motors throught a year range from I think 1975 - 1990, V4 and V6 engines.

Stay away from the Seloc or Clymers manual and get the real service manual.Worth every penny!!
This is the same manual i use,its very detailed and is just a few bucks more than the aftermarket manuals.
I know the seller and he is a great guy.Super fast shipping!!

Also that motor should have the 3 wire rectifier, about 25 bucks to replace if thats the charging problem...takes all of 5 minutes to do..

After looking at the model# i believe its a 1980,Here is the manual,

Re: Newbie : Evinrude 150 year and Qs...

Thanks everybody. I do plant to do my required reading and research. Just wanted to verify the model to get the right book. The engine had a full tuneup ($500) before delivery, and starts and runs well. I would imagine that would include making sure its charging ok. This is why I found it weird that we had to charge the batteries ourselves. Maybe he just meant after long periods of not use.

Thanks for the info. I just bought the manual... :)

Thats good! did you buy the one i gave you the link to?
If so you will love it. It tells you every test procedure, shows colored wiring diagrams, everything to a complete rebuild. Can't beat the factory manual.
I would be lost without mine and the help of fellow Iboaters..;)

Yeah, very first one. Waiting on delivery. In the meantime, I think my brother got it out on the auxiliary tank, so we know the engine is ok. I told him we need to get the gauges working, specially Tach and Volts so we can monitor the situation better. I think he found a new tank for $150 so who knows he might just have it replaced and be done with it. :)
