Hello members, looking for some help. I try to be clear and not demanding. This is my first post so I appreciate your input and patience.

Just picked up a 95 171 that seems to be in good condition. Just had the block replaced by a pro and have a warranty. Dropped it in, runs good however need some direction and suggestions for my observations.

- boat takes a little long to plane. Little sluggish with two guys in the boat IMO on calm waters.
- What is the optimal pitch for speed? I seem to be getting to 35 mph at 4k RPM.
- What is the norm for MPH and RPM on this boat?
- Replacement parts? I seriously got a good deal and its in great condition. So I need to replace the pinstripes at water line and on the passenger front window interior support (someone used it as a grab handle and the plastic broke)

Any all all help, suggestions and recommendations are encouraged. I appreciate your help!

I have a 73 Islander with 450 hrs on the rebuilt engine - Merc 140 I/O likely the same engine you have - yours is an updated version

my manual says - if I'm remembering correctly- the RPM at WOT should be 3800 to 4200 depending on the prop and/or tuning

You're getting 2-3 mph better than me before I fiddled up the timing so she's close to the power - maybe shes needs some fuel filters and Gum-out gas treatment and a tune

I never saw more than 3900 RPM ,and a buddie's GPS measured her at 32 MPH, until I borrowed his DWELL METER and nailed the points ignition specs

I'm now seeing 4150 RPM and don't have a Speedo or a GPS to check her again but I think shes doing AT LEAST 35-38 MPH with a semi-chewed prop

Likely you have a 19' pitch prop on her and its best for speed/cruise on my boat

The 17' pitch prop was better for hole shots with all the kiddies tubing as I did a comparison switch a year or two ago to check

I call the 19' one the 'Speed prop' and the 17' one the 'Power prop'
