Yeah, post the pic's.

West Bend, not worth much and parts, ouch! Would probably be cheaper to look for a refit Merc or OMC in the 40-65hp range plus then the boat wouldn't be as underpowered. Graigslist is your best friend for that!

Where you located?

Spooner here are some links for Westbend parts and info.

I have a 1961 40hp Elgin Outboard some of which were made by westbend
and in my experience the parts are not that expensive the guys at discount
marine are a great resource.

First of all my links page TOGB Links Page.

You will find these links there as well as several others on older outboards.

Laing's Outboard motors.

Discount Marine Parts.

Re: Newbie in over his head. HELP!!!

. While we were standing there talking about it I noticed a small crack about half an inch long on the motor mount.

That would be my biggest concern. How much $$ and how much work. Can a transom bracket be found?

Re: Newbie in over his head. HELP!!!

The crack isn?t on the transom. The transom is the back panel of the boat where the plywood is right? (Bare with me I?m still learning.) The crack is on the part or bracket or clamp that?s on the motor and clamps down onto the boat. Does that make a difference?

By the way Idonthaveaname my office blocked your link.

Hoggar thanks for the links. Haven't tried them yet but thanks.

Re: Newbie in over his head. HELP!!!

You are correct. The transom is the rear of the boat that the outboard motor is mounted on.

A cracked motor mount or a cracked transom would render it unusable in my world until it was repaired. Not going to kill myself or anyone else for that matter.

I think you just be referring to the transom plate. On the aluminum boat below, the transom is the entire plywood part in the stern

Nop. I?m talking on the OUTBOARD. Where the two clamps are that tighten the outboard onto the transom. I can?t remember which part but it?s in that area on the outboard not the transom. I?ll try to get a picture tonight.

I'll still get a picture of mine but if I remember right it's located somewhere in the area I circled in red on this picture.

That is the general area that I thought you were talking about except I thought it was the transom bracket clamp which would be directly to the right of what you show.

Given the amout of force to that area I would say that is an unsafe condition. If it were to crack further the would be a good chance of loosing the motor off the boat.

If you have a real good welder/machine shop in your area you could have that
welded, but you would have to disassemble it completely. You wouldn't want to
heat up any of the rubber gaskets.

Re: Newbie in over his head. HELP!!!

If you are in the cities, then you could try twincityoutboards in Shakopee...they've got tons of old motors and parts. They can tell you what you have, and if they have what you need to fix it, plus they have a machine shop that can do any work you need done...I had an old Chrysler 115 that needed a new cylinder sleeve..."no problem "they said.

Making motor boat sounds with the busty neighbor though...:D I've been doing it wrong!

Of course, the neighbors look at me a little weird when I'm out casting a line off the front of my boat in the back yard too. ( there's no bottom on my boat right now );)

White smoke from a engine usually means water is getting in the motor. Could be as easy as a gasket but could be a cracked head or block neither being a good thing.

"thought this one was such a good deal they couldn?t pass it up."

Many an argument with the wife has started this way. Nonetheless, remember... a boat is just a hole in the water you throw money into. :D

Fortunately, yours is aluminum which should be okay. You will find some great advice here so listen up and it will save your time and money with some sage advice.

Hey Spooner2010 - My link is nothing but a blog through Google. A lot of companies block blogging site so you don't spend your day surfing the net.

Re: Newbie in over his head. HELP!!!

Okay? I still haven't had time or opportunity to get pictures just quite yet (hoping in January) but I have had time to ponder this restore and more questions come to mind than I can find answers to when searching this forum so I?ll ask them.

I?m trying to come up with a materials list and a cost estimate for the project.

One topic is live well. I?ve found affordable pumps and aerators but I?m having trouble finding tanks let alone affordable ones. So I offer it up to you guys. Any suggestions??? Any good websites??? Are there any ?marine salvage yards???? How is a live well hooked up? ie. plumbing, pumps, aerators etc.

Topic two is Hatch Door Latches. If I?m building all this new storage space I?m going to need doors and with doors come recessed latches. The ones I?ve found are insanely expensive. Again? Any suggestions?
