Newbie. Lower unit lube

I have a question for those of you who know more about outboards than I do. Which would probably mean all of you. I am working on a 1979 25 hp. Evinrude which I got for nothing. I have worked on engines over the years, but never outboards. I changed the lower unit lube today. God only knows the last time it was changed. It was as black as black can be, no water in it, but it had a strange odor to it (foul), perhaps slightly burned? I've had the engine running (in a tank) and it sounds fine shifts etc.. It has some electrical issues (that's another story) I have some parts coming soon to deal with that. I'm just curious about the condition of the lower unit lube. Since this is the first time I have ever done this, I have no experience and therefore nothing to compare it too. For those of you in the know, does this seem unusual too you (strange smell)? Thanks for your help.

Im sure its severely overused. The lack of water in the oil is a good sign however. I hope you put new gaskets in anyways, as that is the number 1 spot for water intrusion into the lower unit.

That smell is somewhat normal.If it was black it was for sure ready to be replaced.If there were no signs of water you should be good to go.Remember to replace the nylon washers on the drain and fill screws

Last two kickers I went through had the same issue. Owner just didn't change the lube often enough.

Ditto on changing the drain/fill plug seals every time you change the lube. Go buy a handful and never be without again.
