newbie needing info

hello all. i just bought a flat bottom boat yesterday, 1 is a trolling motor, and the other is sears 7.5. i found the model number which 217 58821. i was needing to know what steps to see if it runs etc. and was also wondering how would you set up auxiliary tank for it

looks like you got a 1971 sears model, most of these were made by eska which have tecumseh powerheads and carbs. easiest thing to do is a spark and compression test if you have the tools to do it, if not get a new plug rj14yc gap it at .035 in., prime the cylinder head with fresh 2 stroke mix 24-1 ratio,give it a couple pulls see if it will fire over for you. i find that using an eyedropper to prime the cylinder head works the best for me about a tbsp at most. you may need to do this a couple times but if you have spark and compression it will run. after determining if it will run you can go from there ie. good carb cleaning, changing the lower end fluid,the basic yearly maintenance. good luck on your outboard and welcome to iboats, you will find as i have there are some individuals here with exceptional knowledge that are willing to help you get it running. check posts from mr crabs or mahtymaht, for more info and also links to websites.

Join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eskaoutboards/ and they have alot of info. Also they have pics , manuals and walkthrus. You definetly came to the right place to get you motor running , these guys are awesome and will help you kick the work that needs to be done on your motor in the butt.

Narwhals gave you a great place to start you adventure. Sounds like you gonna have a very economical fishing machine with a nice main motor and a electric to take over when you get to your spot.

As for the aux tank, Im uncertain. You mean you already have a tank build in on top of the power head right? If so I would just say to just extend the line that goes it the top main tank and disconnect and lead it to a "pony" tank. But Im also uncertain that mabey that fuel delivery system relies on gravity to feed gas from the top tank into the engine. Mabey someone else that has more knowledge than me with ESKA's will clear it up.

Just looked at schematics and it had a 'Optional Remote tank' section so it seems like you can do that.

Post some picture of your motor of the front and inside of the engine bay so we can see what your working with.

well its not a great thing that your not getting spark, only thing i could think of is check the points maybe they need a cleaning if it sat for a long time. if not the points could be the magnet on the flywheel could be weak could be a number of things, but i'd clean the points first and make sure all the wires leading to the plug boot are in good shape no cracks, or bare wire showing. hope this helps and you get it running.

If you have a safety kill switch on the motor check it. It might be a switch that closes when the lanyard is pulled or a button on the end of the tiller handle. Make sure they working because if either or both are faulty then it will give you no spark even if every part of your ignition system is %100.

Start at the saftey and/or kill switch and work your way threw the ignition system.

After that check the other stuff Axeman was talking about under the flywheel.

i looked everywhere i didnt see a kill switch. also i do have lil spark but nothing like it should be

according to my info this 217 58821 model is Solid State Ignition, not points so chances are a blown C1 capacitor. check out Ed Stollers site www.enginesandmagnets.com

don't be so quick to throw in the towel. do you have a service manual for the motor as that will help you troublshooting the ignition issue. i'd be happy to lend a hand if i can. as far as a 10 ft jon boat i'd think anything around a 5 hp should be adequate for putzing around. you could always throw it on ebay or craigslist if you feel its doomed to the depths of davey jones locker.

i had the same feeling when i had problems with my eska and i've been working on engines for over 20 years. the people on this website got me pointed in the right direction and now it runs great. sometimes its best to walk away from it have a couple cold ones and clear your mind from the frustration, then go back after it.

my 6 hp seaking moves my 13and a half foot jon boat real good pefect for just about any thing dont give up motors aint cheap and hard to find
