newbie needs help

I just accuired a 1995 40 hp mercury 2 stroke. It has a tiller handle with an run/off switch. In the piece the cowling clamps to is an engine tilt switch. <br />just forward of this switch is a hole which I assume is for the ignition switch. Do I need a switch with "push to choke" included as part of the switch and what is the wiring for the ingition switch? Also, does this engine incoporate the alarm for temp/oil pressure? If yes, where is the alarm? What type fuel fitting does the motor require? Is a primer bulb needed in the fuel line?<br />thanks in advance for the help. I have a manual on the way but I'm getting impatient.<br />Rob

The run/off switch is very likely the kill switch. A lanyard is normally part of that switch. You attach one end of the lanyard to your clothing so if you are pitched overboard, the tug on the lanyard activates the switch and kills the engine. Yes you need a primer bulb in the fuel line. The overheat/oil alarm is on the underside of the tiller arm. A Mercury fuel line connector is required to attach the fuel line to the engine. Any store that sells fishing/boating supplies will have them. Two stroke engines do not have "oil pressure". The alarm is a combination low oil level/overheat alarm. Don't know about the ignition switch on that engine.

"Upinsmoke", Thanks for the info. Does anyone know about this ignition switch? This is an electric start (forgot to mention this in original post) There is a 7 or 8 pin connector on the side of the ignition system box.

My manual shows an ignition switch in the hole you mentioned. The ignition switch would require the push to choke/prime feature and if the assembly is purchased from Mercury, it would include the harness although you can order the switch separately. Go to Mercury Marines web site. If you have the serial number of your engine, you can look up parts in their on-line parts list. Another route to take is to check e-bay. There are always a bunch of Mercury engine harnesses listed. You'd want one that includes the switch and it could be shortened to work on your engine.
