Newbie needs some help.

Im a noob, just bought my first boat, 1979 hawaiian day cruiser. It has the OMC 800 out drive on it. im looking to find a new steering cable set up for it, iv looked everywere on the net but cant find anything that looks close to what i have. Also i still havent figured out how to get the steering cable off of the drive unit. any info would be a big help. thanks

Send pictures and brand names/model numbers of your existing hardware.

Welcome to the boards Scharnhorst!<br /><br /> Post this in the I/o forum they will be able to help you out better than I can. There are a few guys there that have the same 800 outdrive. <br /><br /> Try ishopmarine.com for part numbers and a schematic. You may even be able to find the part numbers you need at Evinrude.com. Once you find the part numbers call your local marine dealer, they should have it. <br /><br />Also go to this link I/O forum and click on the red search at the top of the page. Search for OMC 800 and you should find what you need. There is plenty to read on this outdrive. I think someone has even done what you are looking to do. <br /><br />One more thing, the OMC800 drives from those years had some special issues that needed attention. Don't let people on the board scare you about your outdrive. My grandfather has a 1980 omc 800 and it has been very reliable for the 13 years that he has owned it.<br /> <br />Good luck and welcome!

thanks for the replys. i have the boat rapped up till the weekend, all have to check for a part# then and get back with you. BTW can anyone tell me how to get the steering cable off of the out drive?
