Newbie. Oil ?

I have a question for those of you who know more about I/O's than I do. Which would probably mean all of you. I have a 2002 3.0L Mercruiser Alpha drive. Just finishing our second season with it, and it still only has 82. hours. I winterized it myself last year, and used the recommended Quicksilver oil. My question is: Why not use a full synthetic oil (like Mobil 1) which would be less expensive than Mercury's synthetic blend.

I see no reason for you not to;
I believe the general consensus (myself included) is that dino oil must be used for new engine break-in.
After that, full synthetic is going to offer superior properties, except for cost.

Let the debate begin.:D

WOW! I am bummed, I was going to be a smart ***** and tell him how many threads were available about "OIL" if he just used the search function, but guess how many hits were returned.

ZERO

What's up with that????

Re: Newbie. Oil ?

They all must get zapped!

You know this oil thing REQUIRES a response from every member right?

Testimonials are always mo-better than manufacturer recommendations anyway........ :p

This would be a great sticky Don!

It should include the Mercury and Volvo Penta's most current recommendations and the NMMA's currents standards on FC-W marine motor oils.

You could even put Merc/Volvo suggestions for drive oil and power steering/trim in there too.

Then it needs to be LOCKED.

Whenever someone ask's about oil they can just be referred to the sticky at the top!
