I have an old pontoon with the above motor. I had the carbs cleaned and the unit adjusted. It now starts easy, idles well, and when wide open just purrs. The problem is after awhile it seems to cut out 2 cylinders or so, electrical like a switch.
I've been advised the water pump may not be great and it may be getting hot and the temp sensor is cutting the cylinders. There is only a small amount of water spitting out the back of the 2 small holes at the back of the motor just above the water line. I was told from the guy I bought the boat a year ago (friend) that he rebuilt the lower unit and water pump and that was normal that they never have a solid stream coming out. The motor didn't seem excessively hot to me at any time.
I took the lower unit off and removed the water pump. The impeller seemed tight, although there is a groove on the plate. I'm not experienced so not sure if bad or not. I ordered an impeller rebuild kit from this site since I had it apart to be sure.
1. What is the orientation of the impeller? I missed noting what direction the 'cogs' of the impeller were going.
2. Any other hints/warnings to install the kit when it comes?
3. If the pump isn't the problem, what would be causing this?
4. Could the temperature sensor be bad (or does this cut-out system not even exist as the person wasn't 100% sure on it).
5. The starter kicks out a bit soon, can a person just get the drive assembly or do you have to buy a complete starter? What is the cheapest place to get a starter if necessary?
6. I'm also wishing I had an electric tilt, any idea?
Besides just wanting to get the boat back on the water (I live in SW Wisconsin and the boating season just got in full swing!) I'm also concerned about putting more $ into it than it is worth.
Thank you much in advance for any info you could provide. It is appreciated.
Bruce
