Motor #1 - title says 1975 but plate w/ model # seems to be missing. Runs well after shop tune-up, but prop shaft leaks lube and need to reseal LU.

1. LU came off easy, but can you confirm part numbers for 1. impeller/kit and 2. lower unit seal kit (MarineEngine.com and Iboats seem to miss listing for 1974 to 1975?).

2. What gear lube gaskets do I use on the drain and vent plugs?

Motor #2 - (bought as back up/spare), Model 557HC, which I take is a 1971. Got it running briefly, but water drained out of LU before gear oil. I discon. shift shaft and took off 4 nuts but someone must have used too much thread lock, as I cant get bolts out or tap lower unit to drop. Is this common/possible?

1. Should I be able to swap this LU onto Motor #1? It looks identicle as shaft length seems the same? One difference, the water intake on this LU is not a grate opening type like on Motor #1. It must take water in through two 1/8" holes on LU housing, yes? I wasn't sure where to put the water muffs onto this unit.

2. How do I try and drop the LU, heat? PB blaster doesn't seem to help.

3. These appear to be what the manual calls "D type", with 2 piece LU, is that right? If so, does the lower unit seal kit come with the gasket between the two parts of the lower? If not, where can I get it?

Sorry so long, I really appreciate answers to the above questions.

Seal kit is 26-820645A-1 which is a quick silver part number. The plug gaskets come with the kit however if you want to buy just them the part is 12-191833 also sierra number and cost under a buck each. Parts can be purchased from a merc dealer. Impeller is part number 433065.

Motor 2 did you remove the shifter? Older models have a coupler with reverse threads in the motor leg. If shifter and all 4 bolts are removed chances are it is siezed to the power head. Is this a salt water motor?

I have a '72 45HP.... The shift coupler has a hole drilled through it and through the shift shaft that a cotter pin goes through. After taking the 4 nuts off pull the cotter pin and be ready for the lower unit to drop! I have found it easier to leave the nuts on the studs so it doesn't put the shift shaft in a bind. Reach in with needle nose or long surgical hemistats (sp) work good for getting the pin out.

Thanks for the good information on part numbers. Would you please respond to questions about motor #2 above? I did disconnect shift shaft/linkage. Nuts are off of the four bolts. Bolts will not come out and thus unit will not drop. I'd appreciate if you'd respond to all questions about motor #2 above.

The gasket between the two units is not provided. You can easily make one with gasket paper and some non hardening gasket compound like aviation permatex. Is or was this a salt motor?? I am guessing it is siezed to the power head. When you mention the four nuts are you talking about the four bolts and nuts that connect the lower unit to the motor leg? If you can get the nuts off the bolts should just come out. There is nothing else holding them in place. Try putting the nuts back on so that no thread shows but it is still loose. Put a piece of wood on the nut and hit it hard with a hammer and see if that frees it up. If those bolts are corroded you are in for a fight with the drive shaft stuck to the power head. That is why in my previous post I asked if this is a salt water motor.
