Newbie Q on cooling

I have a 1965 vintage Merc 60 (6hp) and recently experienced a cooling failure and the motor overheated and stopped. Several times, actually. (My son was running it and didn?t know any better and the poor little thing was white hot)

I replaced the impeller (which was found in several pieces upon disassembly) and the motor runs fine now (unbelievably:redface, but I want to determine if it is being cooled properly. When running, I am getting a stream of water coming out of the port side engine cover (there is no tube there, just a small hole in the bottom on the cover) and also I have a ?spray? of water coming out the engine exhaust.

Is this normal? Thanx in advance for advice.

One more question if I may, please:

Where the cooling water comes out of the port side of the cowling -- my manual (which i think is somewhat generic) says that there should be a little tube there thru which the water exits. I do not have any tubes, just the hole on the bottom of the cowling. The water does seem to be coming out of there (although sometimes a little sporadically)... but where exactly is this water actually coming from?

I guess if I try and take the cowling (is this right word for the cover?)off while the motor is running, I'll be able to better see where this stream of water comes from. Any harm/complications in doing this??

The small engines before about 1970 did nor have the tube, the tube was used because the older engines were difficult to unplug.

Is it possible to remove the motor cover while it is running, just to see what's going on in there?

Charlie,
Remove the engine cover before starting the engine. No harm in doing that but if you remove it while the engine's running you risk hitting the moving flywheel.

How do I pull start the motor if the whole cover is off? I guess just use a bit of rope on the flywheel?
