I have a 150 Mariner that had been sitting for a number of years without being started. Even with my severe lack of mechanical ability I managed to follow the directions of the forum (thanks to everyone who replied) and get it running.. WOO HOO!!!
Unfortunatley, have no water coming out the "tracer hole" though so I assume I need to replace the impeller at the very least. My question is if I'm running water to the lower unit under pressure from a set of "muffs" would water make it's way to the engine anyway, or does the pump need to be funtioning for the water to make it up there? Just curious and trying to learn a thing or two along the way. I know I need to pull the L/U regardless.

Re: Newbie question.. cooling system

Hi guys,

I am also very new at this, and do not have alot of boating/engine knowledge. I have a 50 HP Merc, and am having the same problem. I am using the "rabbit ears", and I believe I have them hooked up correctly, but no water is coming out the engine at the correct spot.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thx!

A small amount of water may get past the impeller and to the engine, but not enough. And if your impeller breaks into pieces, the pieces will be forced into the powerhead, and may get stuck in there.

Thanks for the info, I also talked to a guy who knows about this engine, and all he told me was to be patient, it takes a few minutes for the water to circulate to the tracer hole. Mine is working correctly.

Thx
