I am running a 14'x48" Lowe aluminum flatboat with 1999 25hp Johnson. I have added an extended front deck (aluminum), trolling motor and battery, and 2 "bass boat" style seats. Other than that just the usual ice chest, paddle, etc. I know the boat is not really streamlined nor light, but I am not getting the speed or rpm's I have previously.

History- sat up for a while and would not get to full throttle. Cleaned carb, no change. Put in shop, replaced fuel pump, head gsket and re-cleaned carb. Idles and runs properly, just not getting to WOT rps. Or so I believe.

Because of the recent work, I dont think it's a fuel restriction,
so I am thinking of trying a link n sync, but before I do I want to go ahead and rework everything from scratch. I have a few simple questions to start:

How high should the cav plate be in relation to the bottom of the boat? I havent found a definitive answer.

Can I get a test tachometer for the link n sync, if so where?

Any other helpful hints so that I get it done right the first time, or other things to check would be greatly apprectiated also.

Thanks

Re: Newbie Questions

So how do you know you don't have the revs or speed you had before if you don't have a tach or speedometer? The AV plate should be flush to an inch or so above the bottom of hull. Link & Sync does not require a tach. Are you sure you understand what that process is and what it does? A tach and timing light are required for idle and wide open throttle timing but unless you know what you are doing in that regard, you may grenade the engine. Take the air box off the carb, open the throttle wide open (engine stopped) and make sure the throttle plate is perfectly horizontal in the carb bore. If a service manual has not been recommended to you, it is the best investment you can make if you intend to work ont he engine yourself.

Re: Newbie Questions

I have just been going by sound, with the engine seeming to bog down, I assumed I wasnt getting the rpms.
I have recently purchased a manual. Looking at it, it has a number of steps under timing and synchronization, which of these constitutes a link and sync.
Is it just making sure that the throttle plate is horizontal?
Thanks

Re: Newbie Questions

It should be obvious in the manual... I would read & preform the "number of steps" under timing and synchronization. It sounds like you're trying to avoid work.

Re: Newbie Questions

I'm not trying to avoid work, just trying not to "grenade" my engine. The steps that Silvertip mentioned are part of the timing and sync section in my manual.

I was just looking to see exactly which steps I should perform and if there was any advice on where to pick up a tach and timing light.

Re: Newbie Questions

Timing light I would buy at an auto parts store.. I got mine for $29.99 canadian at Princess Auto. I would buy a marine grade tach online or at a local dealer.
