Found this forum last week after finding the rotten transom on my 1979 ish sea nymph . After reading what seems like a million threads I have a few questions
1. removing motor - should i have my mechanic remove the controls for me or is it something I can do and be able to have everything work when it goes back on
2. how heavy is a 1979 merc 80hp motor and how is the best way to store the motor while I'm replacing the transom
3. I included the only picture of the rear of the boat i have at this time the plywood transom does not go all the way to the bottom of the boat it only goes about 3/4 and rests on a aluminium channel. the screws that go through the transom from the outside need to be removed any suggestions to make getting them out easier. The tie down hooks are bolted from behind and are encased in foam should i just cut out all the foam
4. the transom seems to be 2 inches thick how is the best way to make up a 2 inch thick piece of plywood or is it just 2 3/4inch pieces the have swollen up and when i reinstall the new piece should it be glued/epoxied to the aluminum
any suggestions from anyone that has done a similar transom design would be much appreciated

That's the first spam reply I've seen.

I can answer a few of your questions. My 1969 Merc 650 weighs about 220lbs. At least thats what we estimated it at. I'd say yours might weigh in at least that heavy. It took me, by brother, my best friend and a chain hoist to get my 65hp motor off my boat.

In my case, I took the steering cable loose and in my boat I could remove my control box and just leave everything connected. When I put it back in I should just have to mount the motor and control box and reattach the steering cable.

The plywood is likely 3/4" pieces sandwiched together with fiberglass and resin. I'd duplicate that in the new transom. At least 2 layers of glass and resin to get it well water proofed.

I'm not familiar with Aluminum boats so someone else can answer the re-mount question.

Just didn't want you thinking the only folks on this board were spammers...

actually, a spammer from hong kong, they try to get into all types of forums, we try very hard to keep them out. when you see something suspicious, click of the the red outlined Yield sign, top right of the post. this sends a message to all moderators, there is a potential problem. this helps us tremendously, as there is no way we can read each and every post.

the motor is fairly easy to remove, unplug the harness, and fuel line, starboard side of motor, disconnect control cables port side. it is ready to come off. except of the mounting bolts.

have a place ready to put the motor, you can either put it on a stand, or lay it with the spark plugs down. it is built to sit that way. you can either rent a cherry picker, or come along, or just manhandle it. the later is dangerous, but can be done.

now get a drill and bit, the size of the center of the rivets and drill the caps off the rivets, starting with the trim piece on the top of the transom, careful not to bend it.

then get all the thur bolt out. try to remove the transon in one piece, to use as a pattern. when you get that far. we will go on.

Re: newbie transom repair

I just replaced my transom on an aluminum boat. You should be able to disconnect all the controls from your outboard yourself. If you need to, take some digital pictures before you take stuff apart so you can remember where it goes. Loosely replace any nuts/bolts/screws so you don't lose them. I removed my 85 using the built in lifting eye under the cowl. I have some sturdy shelving in the back of my garage and I connected a cheapy block and tackle to it and the lifting eye and slowly lifted the motor off the boat and just left it hanging there while I worked on the boat. Your transom is probably 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood sandwiched together. PL Premium construction adhesive smoothed out with a notched trowel is recommend to bond the 2 pieces. Dry fit the new wood into your boat and drill all your mounting holes. Take it back out, slightly over drill all the holes. Coat the entire thing with a couple coats of epoxy resin paying special attention to the edges and the holes. Reinstall and mount everything up. Can't comment on your foam issue but I would think you could just remove whatever is in the way.

Re: newbie transom repair

as you can see......there is a world of suggestions on this forum....including from hong kong :D......(our mods are pretty quick.. heh heh heh)

once the motor is off.....measure the whole thickness of the transom, including, the skin. then duplicate it.....its that simple. do it with 8 sheets of 1/4 inch or 2, 1 inch sheets. just duplicate it.

as far as the ply wood goes.......if i may suggest, buy your plywood now. good one side exterior grade will be just fine, dont get fancy with marine grade or pressure treated, you wont notice any difference.

however, all plywood needs to be dryed some...(imho) lay it flat on the floor and weigh it down. give it 2 days, then flip it. it will dry nice and flat.

the repair your about to do.................. wont take long.......... you can be on the water by '09. ....lol..:D :D

Re: newbie transom repair

I'm now this on my Starcraft starting Sunday w/ removing the motors cabling and moving the gas tank out from under the splashwell.

Monday night: I pulled the old transom out, rough cut and laminated the ply.
Tuesday night: Cut ply to shape using the old transom as a template and epoxied the edges.
Wednesday night: epoxied edges again, let cure until tacky and resin-coated a side.
This morning: 1 layer of glass on the coated side.

Tonight I'll be glassing the other side.
Friday night I'll be drilling holes and epoxying them in.
Saturday I'll install.
Sunday - fishing.

I've been spending about 2 hours a night on setup-work-cleanup with lots of breaktime in between.

It's not a tough job, but there's lots of hurry & wait while you let the resin cure. I used 2 layers of 3/4 inch exterior grade ply.

Re: newbie transom repair

thanks guys the one post that said i'd be on the water by 09 got me worried
I don't know if any one is from Canada ( Niagara Peninsula) or western ny (buffalo) area that could give me any ideas of where to pick up the epoxy resin and how much I will need. I tried H.D, and Canadian Tire today, I found the 3m 5200 everyone mentions but no sign of any epoxy resin . Having it shipped from the states with duty customs and dangerous goods handling makes it really expensive.
Okay I found this epoxy locally is it something that will work on the transom
