I have found a aftermarket stator for around $285..others around $268 to $468 from iboats..Maybe e-bay has something or one of you guys on here have a spare stator sitting around collecting dust.Does anyone know anyone on here that strips down Mercs and sell used parts?????Thanks again. If someone has one ,you can e-mail me at : bluemonster156@hotmail.com..

UPDATE:..Ok now I found better instructions how to test stator.I disconnect the 2 wires from the stator(green and salmon colored)My ohm meter is set to Rx1000.I put positive to green lead and negative to salmon lead and get no continuity. Then I reverse the procedure and get 30 ohms. This seems to be within the specs of 20 -50 ohms and showing no continuity firstly as described in manual.I also put positive to green lead and negative to ground and get no continuity. Then I reverse that and get no continuity. It all seems fine by the book. What do I check next then. This is telling me the stator is good. But still don't like the look of the stator yet.

I also checked all wiring for continuity. From the coil, kill switch, spark plug cables, etc. There are no broken wire and all wires seen fine.

Bluemonster, it looks like the insulation thats cracked. I'm no expert but a good guesser. I wonder if when its running if you might be getting some leakage through that area. Maybe if you filled it with something? Like I said, I wouldn't know for sure, but if you're looking to replace it perhaps some silicon infill on that area might help. My 02.

yeah..I filled that with silicone. Will have to try her out again next week after the cold weather and snow leaves again..If it still won't idol..then I am lost.I did link and sync again and it is still fine.I put the old plugs back in just to see what happens.

Re: newbie with a few questions on a Merc 7.5 outboard

well started it up again..seemed to run fine, put it right down to idle and she did idle nicely actually. But noticed water was not coming out as quick as before, and the water that was coming out was pretty hot. Then put in Forward gear and ran it for a bit, slowed it down to nearly idle..in neutral then. She was slowing down and then stopped instantly again.WTF!!.Had to start it up with throttle wide open and run at a moderate speed in the barrel, but every time the water wasn't peeing out right off the bat..when it did it was hot and then it still peed out at higher speed, slowed it down slightly and instant stop again.Took bottom end out and checked impeller..it was friggin shot bad and 3 of the fins were lodged in the pump housing. Also notice the rubber piece that supposed to be in the out end of the pump was on the water line.Well then the metal tube was in the exit end of pump loose. The little nipple was broken off on that rubber piece,so it stays with the tube when I dropped lower end. That was another issue.I took the rubber piece and forced it back in the exit outlet.Tried putting everything back and tube now slides in snug.Took it off and rubber stayed in this time. Now I an trying to figure how the hell I was even getting water moving to the motor.
Now here is my theory: start cold and it idled good for a bit.Run motor in gear for a while, idle down and she stalls out.The reason then is that the motor is getting to hot to soon and causing it to stall.Does this sound maybe like a problem. The water was hot again from pee hole..water was steaming.since some water was moving, motor didn't over cook it self.Oh yeah I thought maybe previous owner may have run this motor hot and it stopped for him.He told me he didn't use it last summer...wander why..So I'll order a impeller or kit.Is there supposed to be a little key where impeller slides into because I can't see it anywhere...

Here is a pic...man maybe the impeller is causing irratic running on the motor..will a motor get that hot that fast without good water flow???

Re: newbie with a few questions on a Merc 7.5 outboard

well here is an update on my issues.Bought another 7.5 motor used and it wasn't running well either..coil was gone on it.But decided to take stator from it to the first motor for the heck of it and the motor now starts good and IDLE'S NOW..WOW!!!!!.
Changed the pump cover because of a crack in it also.Lines all good.Starts 1 pull when warm also and idle is minty now.Problem I now see happening is that the motor runs fine with cover off,put cover back on and motor starts to lose its power.Throttle will not be responsive.Crank to the end and nothin is really picking up in rpm.It is smokin good to..like it is chocking itself.Remove cover and it is a different motor.throttle responsive from idle to end ..no hesitation.Got adjustment screw out 1 turn as it seems to run best there..What the heck gives here now..don't make sense.Cover on seems to tell me there is no air volume getting to the carb then.CONFUSED HERE!!!

Re: newbie with a few questions on a Merc 7.5 outboard

well turned out the exhaust in the barrel was being sucked into the intake area and causing irratic operation.Barrel had a solid top to it and I only cut out enough material to drop motor onto it.Exhaust was not escaping fast enough and got sucked up the intake opening.Opened barrel all up now...motor runs like a charm......thanks alot for your help guys...got a good running outboard now..maybe more guys can read about this exhaust issue and solve their issues...learn something new everyday...GOOD BOATING TO ALL!!!!
