Well first off I am sorry if these are dumb quetions, I have never owned a boat before so this is all new to me, so here goes
I just bought a 1989 Starcraft Metalist 1700 with a 88hp Johnson, is there anyway I can put a trolling motor on these boats? In the picure with the contols what is the lever for that has the black lock handle? how big is the fuel tank, and also can I just dump the oil in the gas tank and then add the gas or do I have to mix it all first?
Thanks

The lever with the black tip is a throttle lever. Used for starting, it will not shift into forward or reverse. If you know how much gas you are going to put in you can dump the oil in first. Pumping in the gas will mix the solution. Is this an oil injected motor or a pre-mix motor? Can you see an oil tank near the gas tank? Are you looking for a bow or transom trolling motor? Remember, there are no dumb questions. If you don't know, ask. Someone will offer an answer.

Re: Newbie with some questions

If the 88 is the same vintage as the boat, then it does NOT have a VRO oil pump, so you will need to add oil to the tank, one pint per 6 gallons of fuel. The 88 was a stripped down version of the 90 and did not come with VRO...

The lever is indeed a warm-up lever. It advances the throttle when in neutral.

Electric trolling motors can be added to pretty much any boat. But a stern mounted one will not be easily accessible on that boat. A deck-mounted version may be the better option.

That boat looks to be in real cherry condition for its age.

Welcome to the site FW, as mentioned above the black lever is throttle and also advances the timing for cold starts. Your ignition key should also push in after you turn it to the run position. The proper procedure for cold start is pull the black lever up half way, turn the key to run and push in on it for 6 to 10 seconds then turn the motor over, when it starts push in on the key if the motor starts to die and it will give it a shot of fuel, use the black lever to adjust the idle speed till the motor warms up, it should not do into gear with the lever up.

The boat was a one owner and he took very good care of it , have maintenance records for everytging he done to it ,from vacuuming the floor to were he charged the battery on winter.
Once again thanks for the replys and I am sure I will have more soon.

Re: Newbie with some questions

Ok I was looking under the dash and found what looks like a switch of some sort just a push button. almost like a safty switch you push it and it goes in but let off and it comes out, then tonight I was looking by my battey and found the same style switch, they just have to wires going to them. also my tach dont seem to be working right. anyone have a wireing diagram of how it should be hooked up?

Re: Newbie with some questions

Can't speak to the switch/fuse issue, but the gauge is a power trim gauge.

The black cylinder with the red lever is the primer solenoid for cold start-ups. When you push the key in when starting, it gives a squirt of fuel into the manifold. It is used in place of a traditional choke. If it leaks in the housing, it should probably be replaced. If it leaks at the hoses, then you might be due for new hoses. The tire valve is for winterizing purposes, as some of the fogging oil spray cans have a fixture that threads onto the valve.
