Is there any special starting proceedure for a first of the year start up. The boat is a 165 hp mercruiser inline 6. I had a friend winterize it. I was wanting to test fire it before memorial day to help ensure it migh run. I know idle only on muffs but should I prime the water pump or engine. If you could walk me thru the safest no impeller damage method I would appreciate it. Thanks so much for all the advice. Sharps-Nut

Nothing special really as far as the impeller goes. Put on the muffs, make sure they're centered on the inlets. Keep the RPM below 1500, 2000 max. Having the muffs on and the water flowing before you crank the engine over will force water into the impeller housing to prime it. You should be fine. The water pump on the engine has a brass impeller and does not need a prime.

Don,t worry about the excess smoke when you fire it up.It is just burning off the fogging oil your friend sprayed into the carb (or should have sprayed into the carb).

Thanks Hum, and bayrider, I know he stabilized the tank and fogged the carb. I just hated to start it and take a chance on screwing something up do to ignorance. Saturday is supposed to be 80 here in the show me state so I thought I'd get primed for summer. Sharps-Nut

I usually give a squirt of fogging oil into the carb and put 1/2 quart of oil into each valve cover fill(yours is only one).I also make sure when I changed the oil last fall that I left it a quart shy.I do this to make sure everything has a little extra lube for fire up.Make sure the muffs are on and the water on BEFORE starting the motor.I push an ice pick through the center of the muffs and into the intake on the drive so the muffs dont slip forward or back.I have had that happen before.Make sure to change the plugs after it has run because they will be fouled from the winterization.hOPE THIS HELPS.CHARLIE

If you fill with antifreeze you can just charge the batt and start her up after checking all the fluids (outdrive too). Now if you drain and leave it dry for the winter, I would fill up the block and the hose going to the outdrive with water so it can pump water through right away. I fill with no tox antifreeze so I charge the batts, double check all the fluids and make sure the hose clamps are tight, belts are on right, etc before cranking over. Be careful with the muffs, they can slip off, I use the expensive dual inlet ones and a 3/4 in diameter hose so it gets a lot of water. Also, make sure no one runs wash or takes a shower, it could overheat the motor!!

Hi
I read in a service bulletine that they recomended that the engine was cranked a few times in 15-20 second with the high voltage cable from the coil grounded,(So it doesnt start)
just to start the oil pump function.
Regards
Affa
