Newer to Boating, have motor question

I recently bought a 74 Starcraft Mariner that is powered with a '72 Evinrude 50hp Model #50273. The motor has been winterized for the past couple years. I am wondering what I should do before I attempt to start the motor so that I don't ruin the motor.

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

change the water pump impeller FIRST
put some fresh gas in a clean can mix it 50:1 with tcw-3 outboard oil hook it up to some muffs and try it - IF it was properly winterized its gonna smoke like a chimney as the fogging oil burns off but it just might run ok IF it does that
if it doesnt smoke like that tear down the carbs and rebuild them as they are probably gummed up
- i have the same engine one year newer and im in the process of redoing EVERYTHING on it (it was a cheap orphan and needed a home and a whole new ignition system :D)

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

For a not very mechanically inclined person what kind of work is involved in changing the water pump impeller?

For ease of trying to get the boat on the water soon, I may see what a mechanic would charge to go through it and get it ready.

I plan on getting the manual for the motor and learning how to work on the motor myself. I have never really done a lot of repair work in my young life, mainly due to the lack of someone to watch and learn from. Since my father doesn't do it, he always traded favors with my uncles for repair work.

about a hundered an fifty bux for labor and 25-30 dollars worth of parts
takes about an hour and a half if you do it yourself (even if you arent mechanically inclined )
youll need a standard socket set do not use metric
theres six bolts in the lower unit
take the starter off and look right underneath were it was and theres a small bolt with a 3/8" head on it take that bolt out first and then the lower unit bolts out wiggle the lower unit around until it comes out (do this with the engine tilted up
the water pump is right on top of the lower unit on the driveshaft youll see four bolt on there - take those out and pull the housing up and off the shaft youll see the impeller and a wear plate underneath there replace those look inside the housing and see if there are any grooves cut into it if you think its bad post up a pic here and we'll tell you whether or not to replace it

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

take cover off engine
remove the starter and lay it out of the way
shift engine into forward gear
take this bolt out

IMG0069.jpg

ok now tilt the motor up

ok heres the pics first pic is a top view of the lower unit when its off but itll give you a better idea of where to look for the bolts like i said before there's seven bolts to take out one will give you access to the 7th bolt its the trim tab bolt (the little fin thingy right above and just behind the prop put some sort of line across it and the bottom of the cavitation plate on the outer edge so you can line it up after you put the lower unit back on or youll have problems steering )
ok so once youve got your line on there (use a sharpie) take the trim tab off and youll be able to get to that bolt and heres the locations

ok now the lower unit should come out when youve got all the bolts out if it doesnt TAP it down with a rubber hammer slide everthing out and set it up somewhere you can work on it
take these four bolts out and follow the video instructions on the link i posted for you

If I take the LU off to see what it looks like while waiting for the new pieces is there anything to worry about with the two halves being sperated. The motor still being outside on the boat and the LU in the garage.

No, those parts are all exposed to water while your boat may sit in the water overnight. There is nothing to worry about. If you buy a used lower it may have sat in a shop for 10 yrs disconnected till you bought it!

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

Is there a better description for the location of the shift linkage bolt? Looking in there and seeing a lot of different bolts in the area.

I took a couple photos of the motor but I am not seeing the shift linkage bolt. I am I looking in the right area?

I cant tell im thinking that bolt seen in both pics under the carbs is in the right place but i cant tell. Its usually directly right under the carbs.

I had the button pushed for forward. If you are speaking of the battery cables it was not hooked up at that time.

Though my curosity has gotten the best of me right now and I am at a complete loss (along with my neighbor who is better at engines than me) because I have a greater wanting to know if the motor will start. So far I know there is spark at the plugs, solenoid is good, starter is engaging, charged the battery, but it will not crank over enough to start. Also tried with jumper cables to the truck. Anyone have any ideas?

If I can't get the motor to start, it will probably go to the mechanic to get everything done and looked at.

Take all the battery connections lose and clean them with a wore brush the two at the battery and then the ground and the hot connection at the starter.....you should do the battery first and leave it unhooked until you have the wires at the motor cleaned and reconnected. It doesn't take very much corrosion to prevent it from starting.

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

ok well the bolts are in the same place ... look for a harness running into the control box for the shifter somewhere along the harness there SHOULD be a plug to un plug the shiftermechanism you should then be able to remove the lower unit with the bolts from the pics above and after that im 99% sure everything else is the same

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

Yea if its electric it wont have a linkage rod. If all you want to do is get the motor running and your just wondering about the water pump it wont matter. You can run it for 30 seconds or so if your gonna replace the imperllar later it wont matter just keep trying to start it and once running you can then replace the impellar.

Re: Newer to Boating, have motor question

The shifter control wires are a blue and green and run down the leg of the motor. there is a knife connector with a rubber slide-on boot on starboard side of the motor. Disconnect the two wires at the knife connectors, but secure a line of some sort to the two wires that run down into the leg. When you undo all the bolts INCLUDING THE ONE UNDER THE TRIM TAB you will pull the LU down and the wires will feed down the passage in the leg. Unless you thread a wire through the same passage, getting those two little wires back up inside the lower cowling will be a pain in the arse. The LU should drop when you undo all of the bolts; the four you can see, and the one you can't under the trim tab. Make sure to scribe the trim tab to the gearcase (i.e. draw a line ) so you can line up the trim tab again when you reassemble.
