Questions as I prepare to check timing.

1) I see some timing marks on the flywheel, but they are not marked. I have a single mark on the flywheel, and then (if I am remembering right) if I progress clockwise along the flywheel, I come to three other marks, each about 1/8" or so apart. Which is the timing mark that I want for WOT? Seloc says 32 BTDC. Might this be the center mark of the three marks?

2) Seloc manual calls out #1 piston as the top piston. Correct?

3) Looking at the timing adjustment rod, I am not sure how to adjust that, as I don't see a way to get a screwdriver or a wrench on it. I see a lock nut, and then the rod enters a block that does not allow me access to the end of the rod to adjust. Is there maybe a slot on the other end of the rod? It is blowing hard outside and I don't want to open up the engine cover and let crap get in it. I'll try and post a picture later when the wind dies down.

4) If desired mark is off to the right of the pointer, does this mean that the timing is too advanced? To move the mark to the left, which way do I adjust the timing screw?

Thanks....

from inside the boat looking at the motor, single mark by itself is top dead center mark, three marks together are timing marks from left to right they are 32-30-28 from inside boat looking at motor, there is a single mark on flywheel you have to aline with timing mark you choose to be best for your motor you will need timing light, READ STICKY AT TOP OF FORUM BY FRANK, it is great!!!!!

There will quite likely be a screwdriver slot on the inside portion of the timing screw. I think you can get to it with a fine blade screwdriver if you put the control in WOT--with the engine not running. If you have the patience and time, reverse the plastic blocks to make it easier to access the slot. This does involve removing the flywheel so you can remove the screw in the trigger. You MAY be able to remove it with a 90 degree screwdriver but there is almost no clearance.

Flywheel mark to the right of the block pointer means timing is advanced.

You do have the option of setting timing at 32 degrees but back in the day: Chrysler reduced timing to 30 degrees BTDC at WOT. This was because of poor quality marina gasoline. If you only use auto pump gas 32 will be fine.

Now, if you set timing to 28 statically by cranking in the driveway, when the engine is running, it will automatically advance to 30.

Re: Next.... timing questions....

Ok, I got how the timing marks work.

Now my question is on mtimingng light do I set for 30 adv or do I just leave it at zero?
I have a light that I can set up the advance?

Leave it at zero adv and just use center line on the fly wheel???

Please help, I'm going to the lake today to try and set it?

Thanks

Yes set the knob on your timing light to zero. Set the timing for the right line of the the three lines. Right most line is 28?. Middle is 30?. Left most is 32?.
