In an attempt to turn football into a pay per view event the NFL has decided to put Thursdays Packers vs Cowboys game on the NFL Network and only show it locally in Dallas and Green Bay.

I don't know if they will have it on the local channel for downloading but here is the site. Hopefully they will show it.

they really screwed up here in Jacksonville, Jaguars scheduling a home game, on Fla Vs Fla State weedend. they knew Fla/Fla State would draw 80,000.

It sure is funny that both the NFL and the cable companies have pending lawsuits against each other. I sounds like to me the NFL wants it included in the basic package and at least around here the cable companies want it on the higher packages. I have not dug to deep into it because I know I always have the option of listening to it on the radio....

I thought that all Thursday night games are on the NFL network and not just the marquee match up. It's no different then Sunday night is on NBC and Monday night is on ESPN. I think it's the cable networks that are more greedy because they refused to cut some of the cheese to keep their customer happy. If they have to includes the NFL network, the Big Ten network, the Yankee Sport Network, etc...there would be less profit. I don't know how true this is but I've heard that Notre Dame Univ. want their own network with exclusive broadcasting rights to their games.

That's why I'm glad to have a dish. I'm definetly not a fan of cable companies and if it weren't for the dish I'd not have B10 or NFL. Picture is much better too.

I have the NFL network (pay extra for the "sports" package on DTV), but as far as production and narrative go NFL sux big time compared to FOX, NBC and ESPN. I will take FOX for sports anyday.

It probably won't be in HD, either.

If you are gonna pay one player tens of millions of bux I guess you gotta get greedy.

The silver lining is that I will at least be able to see it live.

That is the sticking point. NFL wants a fee from all the households in the basic package and cable argues that NFL Network is mostly a rerun channel and would prefer that it be on the ala carte side. Neither one looks good when a "must see" match up falls on the Thur. night game schedule.

I agree with other posters that the NFL wants greater control of revenues. In doing so they run a big risk of antagonizing the fan base. NASCAR and the IRL are ahead of the curve in this area(Car of Tomorrow and too many green/white/checker finishes) and have bumped into fan grumbling and resistance. At some point the sports conglomerates forget that the "great unwashed" is their base.

jb if you have direct tv and the hd package it is on there in hd if you havent go through your channel setup thay added alot of hd channels

You are correct, muskyone. I just upgraded to get the new DTV satellites and. . .

NFL is in the basic package. I pay extra for the Fox Sports Network.

With the new dish and receiver I do get NFL channel in HD when they broadcast in HD, and I also get a bunch of the Discovery channels and the Smithsonian channel in HD now.

Sidebar: Back in the early 80s I was teaching at a Tech College in Ft. Lauderdale and was invited to an "industry-only" showing of experimental prototype of a big, flat screen, "high resolution" TV set. It looked just like modern, hang-on-the-wall HD sets. Blew me away.

Comcast doesn't have them as part of the basic package And I ain't paying for it. I'm with Haute on this one ... Big Cable and Big Football

i hate comcast we wont work for them thay set there prices for contracters and if you dont lke it you dont work for them so thay get guys with no experance doing there work for cheap and you get what you pay for right now i'm building fiber to the home systems for a company thats overbuiding charter and takeing 80% of there custmers

Whoa wait a minute.

First, the NFL is not trying to turn this into a 'pay-per-view' event.

Secondly, the NFL wants its Network in as many homes as possible. Primarily due to advertising dollars I would suspect.

Thirdly, some Cable Companies are refusing to put the NFL network in their base package because they want people to pay extra for it. Not NFL's fault.

Fourthly, DirectTV includes the NFL network in their Total Choice package, not the Sports Package. Actually the NFL network might be included in lower tier packages besides the total choice package.

Which ones have you worked for?
Are they in SE Wisconsin?

i work for small companys little phone companys mostly most of them are going ftth and i dont like it i hate fiber and in west central wi, southern mn ,nebraska, montana, east central wi, sd

This is what my cable co. had to say:

"In Suddenlink's ongoing efforts to make the NFL Network available to our customers, we sent another series of offers to the NFL on Wednesday, Nov. 21, for the Network's consideration.

Those offers included one that would give the NFL Network a free channel, widely available to Suddenlink's customers who want it. We further indicated that the NFL could make that channel available for free or set whatever price they wanted for it and keep all revenues from it, including all advertising revenues. Under that option, Suddenlink would have made no money. Today, the NFL contacted us to decline this offer and all others, reiterating that they would accept nothing less than the same $100 million ransom they demanded more than a year ago".

So my wife says I'm going to Rockwall Tx. to watch the christmas tree light up thing. I had told her I was going to ride up the street in my neiborhood and look for a house with the dish on the roof, stop and ask if they would help a brother out......

That pretty well confirms my suspicions. Since the NFL controls who they sell their games to they will eventually raise the price so high that NBC,CBS,FOX, and the rest won't be able to afford it. Then they will have it all their way and we will loose football the same way we lost Boxing. How many people today even know who the current champions are?
